During our stay we ate River Rat cheese every single day. It is served on the poutine at The Hop Spot, as well as, on the wine cruises hosted by Coyote Moon Vineyard. Rebecca's personal favorite was the XXX Sharp Cheddar aged for 3 years while Zach enjoyed the fresh cheese curds which are served fried on the weekends.
The riverside location in right in the town of Clayton. They have a tasting room to try all of their great wines. Our personal favorites are Fireboat Red which is a concord wine and Razzledazzle which is a raspberry flavored wine. They also serve wine slushies that use the Fireboat Red and were refreshing on summer days. All of their ingredients are locally sourced including the water, grapes, and even the artwork on the labels to show their love for the area.
The vineyard has a more rustic feel and is located in the farmlands of the area. They host events in the summer and we recommend looking ahead to see if there are any that interests you. They also have a larger selection of merchandise and wine to take home.
This was a hidden gem we found on our last day in the area. All of their popcorn mixed are named after places or attractions near by. They have popcorn for every kind of person including sweet, salty, spicy, or experimental mixes. They were willing to let us try all different kinds to be sure we left with our perfect mix.
This state park has a beach, private picnic areas, and a camp shop. The area is known for its many state parks that feature walking trails along the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Great seafood but be sure to make a reservation to avoid the wait. They get packed every night for dinner. The food is fresh, local, and delicious. From the outside it doesn't look like it but it is one of the most recommended restaurants in the area.
The Hops Spot is a biergarten that serves local beer and poutine made with River Rat cheese curds. Our favorite beer here was a pineapple hefeweizen. Everything we has was perfect, as well as, the outdoor seating surrounded by fountains and flowers.
This place is perfect for a riverside treat. We went just for fresh desserts and coffee. It is a small bakery with extraordinary pastries, cookies, and cakes.
This is a sweet little coffee house with an upstairs section and plenty of board games to help pass time. This was our first stop in Clayton when visiting and we enjoyed the relaxing setting. This was also the only coffee place in town that was not a restaurant for a quick pick me up.
We loved the calamari here served with banana peppers and cherry peppers drizzled in a sweet and spicy chili sauce! It was conveniently located in Alexandria Bay and next door to Nav's Popcorn and Dark Island Spirits. It is a more formal dining option and known for fresh seafood and delicious pasta.
This is a more laid back tasting room with an outdoor patio. They allow you to bring your own food or get food delivered to their location since they only serve popcorn with their tastings. When visiting we brought a pizza from Josie's, bought a bottle of Fireboat Red, and listened to the music.
This is a reputable company that provides boat tours in the area. When vacationing we did the 2 Castles Tour and visited Boldt Castle Singer Castle. Singer Castle was built as a vacation home for the 4th president of the Singer sewing machine company. This castle was filled with secret passageways and hidden doors. This company will also be providing the transportation to the ceremony.
A free attraction that is at the point where the St. Lawrence River feeds into Lake Ontario. It is also a great place to watch the huge freight vessels travel. With help from online trackers you can know exactly when one will cross.
The guided tour of this castle was very neat. The castle was built as a vacation home for the 4th president of the Singer sewing machine company. They showed us secret passage ways and hidden doors. There is even the option to stay the night in the private suite of the castle and have butler service provided for special occasions.
Boldt Castle is located on Heart Island, intentionally renamed by the original owner, George Boldt, who was building the castle for his wife Louise. Sadly, during construction Louise died and all building plans had come to a stop. For years the island was vacant until recently when the bridge authorities got permission from decedents of the Boldt family to restore the castle to its original glory with the only terms being that no one is to ever spend the night in the castle since George and Louise were not able to do so themselves. We would love if you took the time on our wedding day to learn more about this love story, as well as, enjoy the castle, structures, and gardens that our venue has to offer. It is truly a surreal place and we hope that you all stay late or come early to be able to fully experience it.
