It’s the fault of Dan Dobbins, a glass of whisky, and playing music on the balcony. The first time we met was November of 2016 in Gainesville, Florida. Both of us were in the chemistry program at the University of Florida, just in different research groups. I was over at Dan Dobbins’ place relaxing on his balcony playing music, a normal Friday night. Our discussions shifted from bemoaning lab work to the new students who had just joined the labs. It just so happens that there was a new student from his group living in his apartment complex. The obvious next step was to invite them over to see how they were liking UF and life with a summer that never ends. Thankfully, Becky decided to swing by and say hi. While two guys playing out of tune Margaritaville on ukuleles might not have been her ideal Friday night entertainment, she stayed and it turned out to be a fun time. School took over, but we still saw each other at department functions, in the chemistry buildings, and hanging out with Dobbins every now and then. That’s how life went for the next 7 months. It wasn’t until the end of May that I worked up the courage to ask her out on a date. Our first date was to a taco shop on June 1st, and then that weekend we took a trip to the beach. Since then, a lot has happened. My brother moved down, I bought a house, and we renovated it while writing my dissertation. I successfully defended and began working as an adjunct professor. The pandemic hit, I got a job in Atlanta, Becky started writing her dissertation. Trips back and forth between Atlanta and Gainesville. Then, Becky successfully defended and got a job in Ohio. More trips between Akron and Atlanta, until November 12th 2021 when we took a trip to Amelia Island in Florida. There, I proposed on the beach and she didn’t run away! Now, we embark on the next part of our relationship and journey. We are excited for everything that is to come and cannot wait to celebrate the start of it with all of you.
