Enjoy a walk on the beach at our favorite seaside spot in Charleston...this beach is famously bohemian and relaxed in comparison to the other beaches in the Charleston area. Go down to the Washout to see surfers ride the best waves in town. A bike ride down to the East side offers a beautiful view of the Morris Lighthouse! Recommend for beers, margs, and snacks: Taco Boy Recommend for coffee: Black Magic Cafe Recommend for brunch: Lost Dog Cafe Recommend for lunch: Berts or The Drop In Recommend for Fried Oysters: Loggerheads
Great family friends of ours, Therese Smythe and Mary Helen Dantzler, give a charming walking tour of Downtown Charleston. Trip Advisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g54171-d5953668-Reviews-Two_Sisters_Historic_Walking_Tours-Charleston_South_Carolina.html
Laura Hipp, another dear family friend and passionate historian, gives a special tour of downtown Charleston. Your tour will end with a luncheon and tea in her home overlooking the Ashley River! She is such a character and so full of knowledge, it is not to be missed.
Recommend a trip to visit Magnolia, Drayton Hall, and Middleton Place all in one day...they are really just down the road from each other and all offer a glimpse into the deep history from where modern Charleston emerged.
Sullivan's Island is another of our favorite beaches in Charleston, though a bit ritzy. It sits just on the other side of Mount Pleasant and offers wide sandy beaches, boutique shops, and award winning restaurants. The island also has rich history dating back to the Revolutionary and Civil War with Fort Moultrie sitting on the southern end of the island. If you're a history buff then you should check it out! Recommend for burgers and beers: Poe's Tavern...Edgar Allan Poe themed with outdoor seating Recommend for dinner and drinks: Obstinate Daughter...delicious brick oven pizzas and seafood Recommend for BBQ and wings: Hometeam BBQ
IOP, as its affectionately known, offers a gorgeous view of the Intracoastal Waterway on the drive in. It has some more of the larger hotels on the beaches in Charleston and has a nice sand volleyball court at the Windjammer, also a fun music venue!
Depending on where you stay, Mount Pleasant offers a variety of great restaurants and activities. There is an old part of town called The Old Village, where Louis grew up. A couple things to do include: going to The Pitt Street Pharmacy for a milkshake and grilled cheese (pictured in the movie The Notebook), taking a walk down the historic Pitt Street Bridge for a great view of the Charleston Harbor, going to Shem Creek to see the dolphins swim by over a beer, or grabbing the best seafood (in my humble opinion) in Charleston at The Wreck of Richard & Charlene. A couple other recommendations: Breakfast: Johnny's, Mozzo, Page's Okra Grill Lunch: Skoogies (best Chicago dog ever), Stack's Kitchen Drinks and dinner: The Mustard Seed, Coleman Public House, Bistro Toulouse
