Travel Note

Getting In

By Air — BTV is our plucky local airport. It’s 10 minutes by car, cab or ride share from downtown. We’ve got regular service to several major east coast and midwest hubs. Fares are higher into BTV but it’s the most convenient option for those short on time YUL (Montreal-Trudeau Airport) is the closest major airport, about 2 1/2 hours away from Burlington by road depending on the wait to cross the border. BOS (Boston-Logan Airport) is about 4 hours away from Burlington by road but often has better fares than any of the other airports in the region. By Rail — Amtrak has two daily trains to the Burlington area. The Vermonter arrives into Burlington Union Station (walking distance from most downtown locations/downtown hotels) once daily in the late afternoon from NYC and points in-between. The Ethan Allen Express arrives into Essex Junction station (15 minute drive from downtown) from DC, Philly and Connecticut once daily in the evening. The same trains both head south from their respective stations first thing in the morning By Bus — Megabus and Greyhound both have several busses daily into downtown from Boston and points in-between as well as from the Capital Region of New York and a single daily bus from Montreal’s Gare d’Autocars. By Road — Interstate 89 passes through Burlington from points north (mostly Quebec) and south-east (the rest of New England). Boston is a little under 4 hours away. Montreal is anywhere from 2 to 3 hours away (timing at the border will vary). Interstate 87 passes to the West across the lake in New York State (New York City is 6 hours away) - there are bridges crossing the lake to the north (Champlain, NY) and south (Crown Point, NY) and ferry crossings at Essex, NY, Port Henry, NY and Plattsburgh, NY. By Bike — We’re going to eat a lot, so if you want to preemptively get your workout in, feel free to follow the Lake Champlain bike path south from the Canadian border - it’s about 45 miles!

Travel Note

Getting Around

Downtown Burlington and the neighborhoods to the north and south are very compact and walkable - if you plan on staying downtown you won’t need a car. Both Uber and Lyft are available but less frequent than in major urban areas. The Burlington area also has a bus system, Green Mountain Transit - it works best during the day and on weekdays and is much more limited on weekends and after 6 PM. If you anticipate traveling outside of Burlington while here having a car is pretty much a requirement. All the regular rental car agencies have counters at the airport and several have off-airport locations as well. Parking in downtown Burlington if you do bring a car is relatively easy. There are metered parking spaces and multiple public garages that have both overnight rates as well as the first two hours free. All the hotels also offer discounted or free parking and parking is free in all city garages and on-street on Sundays.
