How We Met

02/12/2017

On a freezing cold day, a lecture on "African Spirituality" in Newark, NJ brought these two souls together. Basui saw Keyana sitting on one side of the room in her red coat and he went over to ask if she wanted to move her seat to a side that felt a tad bit warmer. She declined. Throughout the lecture, Basui would find reasons to strike up conversation with Keyana and by the end of the night, Basui left Keyana with his phone number. Would she call him? Would he ever get a chance to see her again? Basui was confident that he had left a lasting impression and he waited patiently for her call. A week went by and Keyana decided to reach out to the charming man she had met. The rest, as they say, is history!

The Proposal

May 29, 2020

No one was prepared for the impact that Covid_19 would have on all of us this year. We were excitedly counting down our week-long Aruba trip that eventually got canceled at the height of our quarantine. So instead, we decided to keep our vacation days and head up to the Poconos instead. It would be a romantic getaway for just the two of us, to relax, unwind, and put or lives in perspective. Well, Basui apparently knew all along that he was going to propose. He had thought about all of the details and packed the ring. Our first night was magical with a bottle of champagne, candles and a fireplace going. However, Basui started to feel like the setting was a bit too cliche and he really wanted to make it a surprise. So the following day, we played 4 rounds of pool, which every game HE won! And after we sat down to eat dinner, that's when he took my hand and slid off the couch to one knee. I looked at him and said "Is it happening!?!" To which he replied, "It's happening!" Then he went into the sweetest speech about how he didn't want to go back to NY without me as his fiance. He said he had wanted to do this for a very long time and that he just couldn't wait any longer! Naturally, I SAID YES! (then we both remembered the ring box and he opened it up to reveal the beautiful masterpiece, made by Baaba Heru!) He made me the happiest girl in the world! So in regards to the rounds of pool, he might have beat me but at the end of the night... I WON!
