Alcatraz Island

Take the ferry to Alcatraz for a fascinating tour of the island prison. You need to allow 3-4 hours for this excursion and reserve your ferry crossing in advance.

A wonderfully diverse and beautiful area just over the Golden Gate Bridge that is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There are spectacular views of the bridge and city, numerous hikes, a lighthouse, World War II batteries, a marine mammal center and more. You do need a car or bike to explore it.

Greenwich Steps and Coit Tower

Take a climb up one of the city's famous and charming hidden steps to Coit Tower. Then take in the beautiful views and exquisite murals in the base of the tower (free and usually no line). You can descend back down using the adjacent Filbert steps or go down on the other side into North Beach.

The de Young Museum, the California Academy of Science , and the Japanese Tea Garden are all next to each other near the eastern end of the park. The Conservatory of Flowers, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, and the National AIDS Memorial Grove are also within walking distance in the park.

If you are up for an urban hike there are so many choices. Mt Sutro is just one option where you will feel like you've exited the city and entered the forest. Other favorite hikes are Tank Hill, Corona Heights, Mt. Davidson, and Glen Canyon.
