Alcatraz Island
Take the ferry to Alcatraz for a fascinating tour of the island prison. You need to allow 3-4 hours for this excursion and reserve your ferry crossing in advance.

A world class modern art collection.
Marin Headlands Visitor Center
A wonderfully diverse and beautiful area just over the Golden Gate Bridge that is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There are spectacular views of the bridge and city, numerous hikes, a lighthouse, World War II batteries, a marine mammal center and more. You do need a car or bike to explore it.

Stroll across, it's a 3 mile round trip.
Greenwich Steps and Coit Tower
Take a climb up one of the city's famous and charming hidden steps to Coit Tower. Then take in the beautiful views and exquisite murals in the base of the tower (free and usually no line). You can descend back down using the adjacent Filbert steps or go down on the other side into North Beach.
Golden Gate Park
The de Young Museum, the California Academy of Science , and the Japanese Tea Garden are all next to each other near the eastern end of the park. The Conservatory of Flowers, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, and the National AIDS Memorial Grove are also within walking distance in the park.
City Lights Booksellers & Publishers
This famous bookstore founded in 1953 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin also sits on the edge of both Chinatown and North Beach. Two interesting neighborhoods to explore.
The Walt Disney Family Museum
The Walt Disney Family Museum is a museum that features the life and legacy of Walt Disney where you will discover animation, innovation, and inspiration in his remarkable story. It is located in the Presidio which is also a beautiful part of the city.

A hands-on museum of science, art, and human perception that's dedicated to the excitement of experimentation, the pleasure of discovery, and the power of play.
Legion of Honor
European art collection set in a glorious hillside location. The building is quite impressive as well. Several scenes from Vertigo were filmed there.
Balmy Alley
Some of the most colorful and vibrant murals in the Mission.
Baker Beach
September is our warmest month and if we are lucky enough to get a beach day you can head to one of our favorite beaches, Baker Beach, where Burning Man began. Next door is Marshall's Beach which is a predominantly gay, clothing optional beach.
Asian Art Museum
Houses one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian Art in the world.
Lands End Lookout
The Northwest corner of the city is beautiful and powerful. The end of the continent and the entrance to San Francisco Bay.
The Castro
The Castro is changing but it is still the center of gay life here in San Francisco. There are numerous shops. restaurants, and bars and of course the people watching can't be beat.
Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve
If you are up for an urban hike there are so many choices. Mt Sutro is just one option where you will feel like you've exited the city and entered the forest. Other favorite hikes are Tank Hill, Corona Heights, Mt. Davidson, and Glen Canyon.
