How We Met

#ThatOneTimeAtHoranCamp

That one time at summer camp…. If you have spent any time with Sarah or myself, you have heard us start a story like this. We would tell these stories to our friends, our families, and even to strangers at a bar. For years we would yammer on about this camp, not knowing our favorite story had yet to come. Sarah and Dustin met at Camp Holiday Trails (CHT) in 2010. Though they knew each other from afar, they developed a mutual respect for one another. CHT provides a summer camp experience for children with chronic health conditions, a mission that would later direct both Sarah and Dustin's careers. Sarah and Dustin became friends in 2012 during their shared year as counselors. Sarah would finish her time as a counselor and move away. Like too many camp friendships, Dustin and Sarah lost touch. The pull of home is strong, however. Fast forward to 2017, and Sarah returned to Charlottesville to finish her final year of Vanderbilt’s nurse practitioner program. At the time, Dustin was living in Richmond and working as a substitute teacher. The passing of a close friend and camp mentor reunited the two. Both were in new phases of their lives and enjoyed catching up on the lost time. A friendly invitation to a St. Patrick’s Day party brought Sarah to Richmond. Another found her on a riverside date with her friend of many years. A few weeks later, Sarah returned to Nashville for classes and Dustin happily tagged along. The two dated casually through the summer until Sarah’s graduation in Nashville. Dustin’s schedule would not allow for a three-day weekend. 1250 miles of driving in a span of 60 hours showed Sarah Dustin’s true intentions as he could not miss her big day. When offered a position at a pediatric urgent care in Richmond, Sarah happily accepted and made the move to Richmond. Two cats, one dog and a house purchase later, they made Richmond home. Then this past June, one last trip down Camp road found a diamond ring at the end.
