We recommend using a credit card in Brazil (Discover is not widely accepted there so bring another option if that's your card) and use cash when purchasing from street vendors. You can withdraw cash from multiple banks there, including at the airport.
Wear your bags in front of you, do not put your wallet or cellphones on back pockets, stay away from dark places, and don't stand so close to the edge of the sidewalk while waiting on traffic. We have very fancy pickpockets, and they drive motorbikes.
Yes! Brazil heavily uses Whatssap for communication, including for services such as deliveries, tattoo shops, tour guides, etc. Another good idea is to download the map of the area you will be visiting so you don't need to rely on internet.
