Mak Beng has been around forever, this was Ayu's dad’s favourite 🙂 Like a lot of places in Sanur, it can get a bit touristy but it’s still an institution! Arrive outside peak lunch hours to avoid the mega crowd. They only serve one set menu: rice, fish head soup and fried fish with a side of sambal and half a jeruk lemo.
Another cult-fave nasi campur place that made it big but the quality hasn’t slipped. Try to get there before 10 am on weekdays and a bit earlier on weekends. It’s located in between Segara Ayu and Sindu beach, so parking can be difficult if you’re driving. Try the Segara Village parking lot if the street is full - you don’t need to be a guest of the hotel, just say you’re visiting their beach bar (Byrdhouse) and get a stamp.
Ayu's best friend’s family owns this spot ❣️They’re a proud Sanur clan. The nasi campur here uses a lot of local Sanur ingredients that is unlike other nasi campur on the island. There’s a crispy ikan tawah (a type of reef fish) - fried so crispy, you can eat the bones; squid and prawns in suna cekuh (garlic and sand ginger); lawar bulung (seagrapes spiced salad); sambal mbe (fried sambal) and a side of fish soup (similar to Mak Beng style). It’s a family kitchen so they don’t tend to overstock and sell out by 2-3pm so get there early for lunch.
Ayu's mum’s favourite place when we were growing up - post-school pick up vibes but it’s nice and wholesome. The food is western-leaning but there’s solid Indonesian options. On Sundays, they have a traditional market in the morning, a good spot for family hangs.
Co-op canteen serving plant-based food.
A grand offshoot of the legendary Ubud ribs restaurant. Get a martini too.
This warung is famous for rujak kuah pindang (fruit ‘salad’ in salted mackerel broth - it’s kind of like som tam thai (papaya salad) but with sour fruits, eaten as dessert or in-between meals). The other variant is rujak bulung (similar broth but with seagrapes instead of sour fruits).
Ayu's family’s go-to for nasi babi guling (Balinese suckling pig with rice) in Sanur.
Bubuh Bali (Balinese rice porridge) for breakfast (Tony's favourite).
For when you’re missing Melbourne style coffee.
Late night sweet roti canai and teh tarik (sweet milky tea).
For Nasi Padang, Rumah Makan Sari Bundo Jaya is a 24-hour favourite.
This is one of Hyatt Regency’s restaurants, great if you feel like a weekend hotel brunch or lazy dinner. Their nasi goreng buntut (oxtail fried rice) is amazing. Wide variety of buffet options (Balinese, Indonesian, and Western) and a super fun kids pool nearby.
The nicest parts would be from around Nasi Weti/Segara Ayu to Hyatt Regency. Flag down a lumpia lady (Balinese spring rolls with peanut gravy) and enjoy them by the beach 😋
There’s usually a massive kite festival in Sanur around July/August. Keep your eyes peeled for the event posters.
Novi runs one of the best Balinese cooking channel on YouTube! She's based in Sanur and she offers private cooking classes for individuals or small groups up to 4 people. Tony's favourite manicure and pedicure spot. They are so patient and thorough. Highly recommend it.
There are two really interesting places for sightseeing groceries. GrandLucky Sanur is a mecca of imported goods, filled with old expats and their companions.
Arta Sedana Sanur is a kind of one-stop-shop, dressed in hyper tourism mode. For quicker groceries, there are Alfamarts and Circle Ks along the main drag (Jalan Danau Tamblingan).
The best-smelling bug spray, and it works! Love their lemongrass soap and essential oils too.
The best pie susu (milk/custard pie) on the island. Also a souvenir shop selling other Balinese treats.
English-language bookstore chain.
Beautiful handwoven fabrics and clothing in the Balinese Ikat style. They have ready made items or you can commission anything you’d like too.
Great wholesale prices on snorkelling and diving equipment, lots of gears for kids too. Super friendly staff.
