Flo: We met how any couple meets these days - a dating app. Back in December 2015, I was working as an intern in the Bay Area and Austin was working long hours at a Palo Alto startup. Then one fateful evening, Austin and I matched on Tinder and started to chat. Austin: After a few days, I boldly asked Flo when we would finally meet and he suggested meeting the next evening. Not sure how a Monday night meet-up would fare, I agreed anyways, intrigued by the German boy who had a cute profile picture but a questionable profile description proclaiming "if you don't live on the edge you're taking up too much space in life". I had already been charmed by the way he teased me about not being able to find a bar that serves milk, after I embarrassingly told him that was my favorite drink via text. Flo: The first date turned out to be a great success, filled with long conversations and a few rounds of pool (which I won). Then over the next 6 months, we spent more and more time together until eventually, I had to return to Germany. Austin: The next 3+ years were filled with Skype calls, lots of texts, and occasional visits to meet in person, in Germany, California, and New York. Finally, in early 2019 after finishing my Masters, I took a gamble on the German man I had fallen for over the years and moved to Munich. Since my arrival, our relationship grew stronger and stronger, and we began to build a life of our own together in Germany. Flo: In summer 2022, while on a vacation in Portugal, I prepared to ask THE question. After an afternoon of surfing, we drove with our scooter to a small and crowded beach in Lagos. To get away from the crowd, we swam off to a secluded cove. While taking in the peaceful moment, I asked Austin if she would like to marry me. I just got a "Are you serious?" back. Oh well. But after she realized that I was serious, she luckily agreed. That’s the quick version. But now we can't wait to celebrate with all our family and friends in July 2024!
