The "Crown Jewel of San Diego," Balboa Park features plenty to see and do, including expansive lawns and numerous museums. Some of our favourite places in the park include the Spanish Village (an artisan village filled with locally made jewelry, paintings, and figures), the Japanese Friendship Garden, and the pond. The park is free to visit, with admission fees for most museums and the Japanese Friendship Garden.
The San Diego Zoo is considered to be one of the best in the world, with numerous exhibits, a skyfari that takes you high above the park, and a beautiful bird habitat. The zoo also does wonderful work to protect animal populations, including bringing back species from being extinct in the wild, and giving permanently injured animals a safe place to thrive.
The sister park of the San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park offers a unique experience see animals in a more natural habitat, including the only platypus outside of Australia. If you're interested in animal conservation, this is a wonderful place to learn more about the great work happening in the world.
The USS Midway Museum is a historical naval aircraft carrier museum located in downtown San Diego, California at Navy Pier. The museum consists of the aircraft carrier Midway. The ship houses an extensive collection of aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California.
La Jolla shores is one of the most popular beach areas in San Diego. Not interested in swim or surf? There's a paved walk overlooking the beach to enjoy. This is a great place to see seals, sea lions, and other marine wildlife. The beach is also within walking distance of a number of popular restaurants and shops. Parking in La Jolla can be tricky, so we recommend earlier or later in the day to avoid crowds, or taking an uber/lyft!
