I first met Nigel when he crashed my birthday brunch along with his parents. It was Sunday, November 4, 2018, and I was turning 35 that day. The celebrations began that weekend in New Orleans. My line sisters met to commemorate our 15 year anniversary of becoming Alpha Kappa Alpha women. I also invited my sister, Rachel, to join in the New Orleans/birthday fun. We started off with a nice dinner that Friday evening and then proceeded with 2 nights of wholesome Bourbon Street fun ;). Before we knew it, it was Sunday morning and we needed to get to my brunch in Baton Rouge. To say we were struggling would be an understatement. We were late; struggling to find an Uber that traveled long distances; and it was storming. We finally found a driver and while in route to the brunch, I received a text from my line sister, Kia. She was in Louisiana that weekend for our dinner, but also for a wedding. She wanted to invite a few friends from the wedding to my birthday brunch. Kia also shared that one friend would be joining with his parents. I quickly replied "yes" with little attention because I was more concerned we were running late for the party! Thankfully, my Mom and Aunt Jackie were heading to the restaurant for setup and to welcome my guests while I was in route. We arrived to the brunch and I started to greet my guests. As I walked further into our party room, I saw a guest I didnt recognize. Not only did I not recognize him, but he was walking towards me with a big smile and his arms wide open for a hug. He yelled out a friendly "heyyy." I panicked and thought to myself, "who is this person? Did I invite someone and forget, and how does he know me?" However, I stayed cool under pressure and relied on my Southern charm. I pretended to know him, opened my arms for the hug too, and yelled an equally friendly "heyyy you." As we hugged, he leaned in, laughed, and said "QUIT PLAYING, YOU KNOW YOU DONT KNOW ME! He then offered me a drink... (see Nigel's story)
I met Ashley when I offered to buy her a drink, and she turned me down! I traveled from California to attend a wedding in Lafayette with my parents. Afterwards, my friend Kia invited us to a typical Sunday brunch in Baton Rouge. Since my Mom hadn't seen much of Louisiana we decided to go. The next morning we started to drive but it began storming; so much that we considered turning around but, we didn't. When we arrived, I saw a lady with a cake trying to open the front door so I held it open for her. I asked the host for a reservation under Ashley but there wasn't one. I tried calling Kia but she didn't answer. I soon learned the reservation was under Jackie, and that this wasn't a typical Sunday brunch, but instead a birthday party. The host took us to the party room, where I introduced myself to a room of strangers. After introducing myself, they stared in silence and then asked how I knew Ashley, which I replied “I don’t, but Kia invited me.” Everyone stared again, this time more confused, and replied “who is Kia?” Recognizing this was turning into a situation, I changed the subject, turned to my parents and said “these are my parents,” because who'd turn a guy away that shows up with his parents! I then saw the lady with the cake, which turned out to be Ashley’s Mom. She asked how I knew Ashley, in which I replied, "I don't." She then asked if I went to school with Ashley, worked with her, or lived in DC? I could tell she wanted to ask why I was at Ashley's party, when I didn't know her. She left but returned to ask again, "now how do you know Ashley?" I said, "I don't know her but when she comes in, I'll walk up to her and pretend I do know her." She laughed at the idea and when Ashley walked in, her Mom pointed her out. I approached her, laughed as she pretended to know me, and then I offered her a drink. I knew I needed one to survive what would be the craziest brunch ever. Ask us about the brunch but most important, what happened after the brunch!
