Engagement Day

November 4, 2024

Miguel and Kate were close to their third anniversary as a couple and were in San Miguel de Allende to celebrate the wedding of close friends. It was Día de Muertos weekend and after 4 days of tacos on the street and mezcalitas, they were looking forward to visiting one of their favorite places in the world -- Mexico City. During an unexpectedly long bus ride to CDMX, Miguel became particularly picky about where they went to dinner that and the following night -- all of a sudden doubting the carefully curated reservations Kate had made months in advance (this should have been Kate's first sign). When they finally arrived, they checked-in their hotel in Condessa and later arrived two hours late to their hastily-made reservation - a place that looked like a short, crowded hallway but happened to be a Top 500 Bar. After Miguel convinced the barmen to let them have a seat at the counter, they shared a sandwich and *very* casually talked about their future - kids, marriage, and wedding. That night, they went to bed relatively early excited about being able to spend the next day walking around the city. The next day they both woke up on the first ring of their alarm -- something that is not particular about Miguel (this should have been Kate's second sign). They got dressed quickly and went downstairs where they were serving breakfast. Miguel easily convinced Kate that they should instead go for a stroll and stop by a cafe (this should have been Kate's third sign). After walking several blocks on a beautiful sunny day, they came across a park and took a selfie -- and this is where Miguel said "this is the spot" -- but couldn't be too obvious, because they JUST took a selfie here. So he tells Kate: "I saw a spot we can go for that coffee..." and they walk around... and around... and around.. and, without Kate knowing, around the same two blocks. As they made it back to the same park, Miguel asks Kate if she'd like to take a picture. Considering they needed someone to take their picture for them, Miguel lets several passers-by through waiting for a person that seems they know how to work a camera (aka: someone young). Finally, a young woman is walking with her coffee and while Kate is answering emails, Miguel kindly asks the lady to take "more than one... just in case". They take one... two... three pics... and just when the kind lady is going to give them their phone back, Miguel asks her: "can you do just one more?"... and that's when he tells Kate a lot of romantic words... and then... he gets on one knee and asks the question: "Kate, will you marry me?". It was Kate's easiest yes!
