We met at work — in the emergency room at Sharp Memorial — where we were ER technicians, coworkers, and very much not single. What started as a friendship lasted nearly five years (even through Nico’s repeated and well-documented attempts to escape what he lovingly calls “the friend zone”) before slowly and unexpectedly turning into something more. We made it official in August 2023 and now share not only a life together, but a calling — both working as registered nurses. Our relationship has been shaped by shared purpose, service, and a desire to love and serve others well. In South Africa, Nico pulled off the surprise of a lifetime. At a winery overlooking Cape Town, with his mom Judy as our witness, he proposed — and April had absolutely no idea it was coming (including zero outfit preparation). It was unforgettable and deeply meaningful, affirming our desire to pursue marriage with intention and trust in God’s leading. Back home, our little family grew when we rescued our pup, Willow. From coworkers to friends to pup parents — and soon-to-be husband and wife — we step forward with gratitude, humility, and faith.
