We met on January 19, 2018, at UCLA during a Hermanas Unidas and Hermanos Unidos social event. Vanessa was busy selling banda club tickets, and Anthony was equally busy declining her pitch. After a quick “no thanks,” Vanessa moved on, unaware she’d just met the love of her life. A week later, at the same event Anthony claimed he couldn’t attend, he surprised Vanessa by asking her to dance. We spent the night dancing and getting to know each other. By the end, Vanessa was certain there was something special—until Anthony checked his Snapchat instead of asking for her number. After Anthony followed her on Instagram, Vanessa waited for a message that never came. With a little help from her friends, she discovered we’d both be at another event together the following week. Vanessa planned to give him the cold shoulder, but the moment Anthony invited her to dance, she couldn’t resist. This time, he redeemed himself by asking for her number. That night—February 8, 2018—became the foundation of everything. Our first date at the Santa Monica Pier was as timeless as the feelings that blossomed between us. Despite the chaos of full class loads and demanding jobs, we made time for each other, learning about one another’s worlds. Anthony discovered what a Speech-Language Pathologist is, and Vanessa learned the (still confusing) difference between concrete and cement. By summer, we weren’t sure what would happen when Vanessa graduated and moved back to San Diego. In August, Anthony casually introduced her at a family party as “my girl.” Naturally, Vanessa needed clarification, and we decided February 8th would be our anniversary. Over the past seven years, we’ve shared countless milestones: graduating college, earning master’s degrees, starting our careers, moving in together, presenting at national conferences, and traveling to places like Maui, Chicago, and Mexico. Through it all, we’ve been each other’s best friend, biggest cheerleader, and favorite dance partner. Vanessa, a devoted Twilight fan, jokes that she’s found her Edward Anthony Cullen, and Anthony, a huge fan of The Office, swears he’s found his Pam. But in truth, what we’ve found in each other transcends the pages of books or the scenes of a show. It’s a love grounded in friendship, laughter, and an unshakable connection that began on a dance floor seven years ago. We’re so grateful for the family and friends who’ve supported us and can’t wait to celebrate with you. Bring your dancing shoes, because on our wedding day, we’ll relive the magic of February 8th—dancing the night away as we begin our forever.
