It was on a warm spring night in Seattle in 2003 where Lena and Tony met for the first time at a mutual friend’s get together. They quickly bonded over their shared obsession for all things food and travel-related and had a sweet but short-lived courtship which ended with Lena’s upcoming graduation and Tony’s move to Madison, Wisconsin. Before parting ways, Tony gifted Lena a Henri Matisse book that he picked up at a local bookstore on University Avenue, in honor of their shared admiration for the artist. Fourteen years after their first meeting, Tony reached out to Lena on Instagram. Intrigued after a fourteen-year gap in communication, Lena wrote back and they started conversing. After two years of long-distance love and many globe-trots, a winter jaunt to Copenhagen resulted in a proposal at the Statens Museum for Kunst. Tony got down on one knee in front of no other than a Matisse painting—an homage to the first gift he ever gave Lena.
