"So, how did you both meet?" Sergio was born in Cali, Colombia, which is about a 1.5 hour flight from Cartagena, & over 2,500 miles away from New York. Sergio & his Mom immigrated to New York City when he was 7 years old, around the same time when Anthony was born in Manhattan. Sergio spent the remainder of his childhood in NYC, while Anthony was raised about 1 hour east on Long Island. In the Spring semester of 2018, Sergio & Anthony were both enrolled in college on Long Island. Sergio was studying industrial-organizational psychology at SUNY Farmingdale while Anthony was studying social work at Adelphi University. Both programs had field placement or community service requirements. Sergio & Anthony coincidentally chose the same non-profit organization—Pride for Youth (PFY), in Bellmore, NY, to fulfill their obligations. PFY is where Sergio & Anthony officially "met." Both were drawn to the site for it's mission to serve LGBTQ+ youth on Long Island. They were always assigned to the same shift & often worked side by side for several months. They shared a similar work ethic, career aspirations & got to know each other well. Once their contracts had ended with PFY, a mutual PFY colleague, Alexis, invited Sergio & Anthony out on several occasions, first to The Good Life pub in Massapequa Park, & then to her apartment subsequently. Once colleagues, now all friends. Sergio & Anthony spent more & more time together. By July 2018, their attraction towards each other grew immensely & eventually started dating. Something that Sergio & Anthony discovered early on about each other was their love to travel. It wasn't long after they started dating that they began exploring. Anthony planned their first adventure-- a treehouse hard cider tasting at the Angry Orchard distillery in Upstate NY, followed by a scenic mountain-hike. A few months after, Sergio surprised Anthony with their first international (road) trip together to Quebec, Canada. Later on, they took to the skies & traveled domestically to Chicago & Jupiter before leaving the country for Europe, Africa, Asia, & the Caribbean. As a couple, Sergio & Anthony have been to 5 continents, 14 U.S. states, 16 countries & counting. In the summer of 2020, Anthony & Sergio moved into their first apartment together in Forest Hills, NY & adopted their now 3.5 year-old rescue dog RJ. Just after Christmas, Sergio proposed to Anthony while on a weekend getaway in Saratoga Springs, NY on December 28, 2020. A few months later, Sergio took Anthony to Colombia for the first time. Their first stop was to Cartagena--a city that neither had traveled to before. They were mesmerized quickly by the old city's charm and knew that they would return at some point. On the next leg of their trip, Sergio introduced Anthony to his dad & brother who still live in Cali. Though not fluent in Spanish, Anthony felt extremely welcomed by Sergio's family & the country as a whole.
