The Engagement Story

As anyone who knows him would tell you, Anthony is subtle. A man of few words. Thus, when it came time to ask Brenna for her hand in marriage, he naturally approached it in the most conventional way possible—by secretly writing her a novel. Indeed, over the course of a year and a half, Anthony wrote Brenna a folksy fantasy story chock-full of pop culture references, inside jokes, and even subtle allegory. The novel follows a fussy young man who, unlike the rest of the land's inhabitants, does not believe in magic—until he comes into contact with a beautiful nymph whose wisdom, grace, and allure show him that the world is enchanted after all. You know—subtle. Anthony wrote the book under a pseudonym that he knew would be familiar to Brenna: Iwrsolwyt Fataotwa. It would be familiar because ever since their first week of dating, Anthony used the pseudonym to subtly(!) disguise random gifts he sent to her apartment. Brenna always wondered what it meant but felt too embarrassed to ask (lest it was intended to be obvious). One day, Brenna "just happened" to stumble upon the novel in a bookstore. Hidden in the back of the book was a cipher, one designed to lead her on a journey across Redlands, solving riddles that led from one clue to the next. Each decoded message took her to a significant place, tracing the history of their relationship. And at the end of this scavenger hunt, standing fifty feet in the air in a manlift (a story for another time), was Anthony—waiting with the final riddle. The climactic question was simple: “What is my name?” But, as Brenna soon realized, “Anthony” wasn’t the correct answer. No, the riddle referred to that blasted pen name, Iwrsolwyt Fataotwa. What did it mean? Anthony guided her memory back to the first gift he sent her under that name: a Blu-ray copy of The Lord of the Rings. With that hint, Brenna began to piece it together, realizing the pseudonym was an acronym. After some thought, she cracked it. It was a line from Fellowship of the Ring. The line in which Arwen professes to Aragorn why she would choose to give up her immortality in order to be with him: "I Would Rather Share One Lifetime With You Than Face All The Ages Of This World Alone." And with that, it became clear: Anthony had proposed to Brenna, in acronym form, during their very first week of dating. So, you know—subtle.
