On our list to check out! This is an ecological underground river tour experience approx. 40 min drive from Chable. Multiple tour options available, including hotel pick up. Go deep inside an underground cave; hike and swim through a route of about 1 km full of beautiful and dramatic stalactites and stalagmites.
The Mayan archeological ruins at Chichen-Itza, Coba and Tulum are popular day trips. Chichen-Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating from ~400 AD, is just over a 2 hour drive. One can rent bikes or pedi-cabs at the sprawling Coba jungle ruins complex and there are swimmable cenotes nearby (~2 hr drive). The much smaller seaside ruins at Tulum can be combined with a visit to the town of Tulum. Just over an hour drive, they offer ocean views and swimming. Sites only accept cash.
An hour ferry ride away is the island of Cozumel, with world class snorkeling and diving. Apparently you can rent a scooter or dune buggy and drive around the island.
The Riviera Maya is known for its cenotes, or fresh water-filled sinkholes created by underground caverns which have collapsed upon themselves. There are multiple nearby and many tour providers offer outings, including transportation. Several also offer snorkeling and SCUBA. Jump in and take a refreshing break from the heat!
