It was a symbol of Norman occupation, and in its original 13th-century condition, it would have formed an important element of the town's defences with four large circular corner towers and a massive ditch, part of which can still be seen today on the Parade.
Smithwick's was founded in 1710 and is Ireland's oldest brewery (Guinness was founded in 1759). It would be safe to say that this attraction appeals to those interested in the brewing process, and the history behind the brewery. The journey starts with the discovery of the early monks and progresses through a number of generations of Smithwick's in a clever display. The brewing process and essential ingredients are then covered in detail. The tour culminates in a generous sampling of Smithwick's brews.
