How We Met

Anjo's Version

It all started on a cold winter night. The ground is literally ice. Unable to properly equip a snowboard, Anjo is stuck and lost at the bottom of the slopes. Hopeless, bewildered, and still clueless, he cannot find a friend in sight. Then, a glimmer of hope, Vina and Jann, shows up nearby. Anjo still did not know them that well. So, he tries to get their attention; waving like a man stranded in a deserted island. Vina makes eye-contact, but suddenly, pulls out her cellphone. To this day, Anjo still believes she did this on purpose to ignore the creep trying to get her attention. Jann finally motions to Vina that the idiot flailing around is trying to make contact. That's how Anjo met Vina.

How We Met

Vina's Version

It all started on a cold winter night. Vina and her cousin, Jann, had finished their snowboarding run. They stood at the bottom of the slopes, waiting for her friends. Vina missed a call from her friend. She had to call her to let them know where they are at, but there was no answer from the other line. It is very difficult to look for anyone in the slopes as everyone is wearing goggles, beanies and winter clothes. Vina did not notice Anjo flailing his arms for help. To this day, Vina still has a vague memory on the exact details on how she "ignored" Anjo. She was probably too focused looking for her friend. That's how Vina met Anjo.

The Proposal

April 11, 2018

As they say, time flies when you're having fun. Anjo plans a Hawaii trip with Vina. Vina is completely oblivious of Anjo's plans. On the first day of getting to Hawaii, Anjo requests to watch the sunset. They look for the best spots to view the sunset in Oahu. So they drive to Nuuanu Pali Lookout. The sky is gloomy. Thick, dark clouds start forming and the wind is pushing from every direction. The view was amazing and definitely breathtaking; perhaps literally, since the air is thin and the wind is visible. Rain starts to pour alongside the heavy winds. Anjo's anxiety increases. The preparation, the memorization, the timing, the ring, all of it was about to get blown away. He could not take the risk of pulling out the surprise waiting for Vina. So, saved by fate, there was another viewpoint on the way down: Tantalus Lookout.

The Proposal (continued)

April 11, 2018

Anjo rehearses in his head a hundred times on the way down. Vina is still unaware of what's coming. They arrive at Tantalus Lookout and it is just as mesmerizing as Pali Lookout. It drizzles on and off. The sun is about to set. Rain drops falling on their head. Vina is in his arms; both facing the sun setting in the west side hills. Thoughts racing through his head. She's still staring at the horizon. He asks, "Remember our first date? We were also watching the sunset in Santa Monica." She replies promptly, "Was that a date?" He sarcastically chuckles. As the sun sets, he turns her around and goes down on one knee. His heart racing faster than it ever has in his life. "That was the beginning of our adventures. Each I cherish more and more. I was hoping that you can start a new adventure with me. Will you marry me?" At least that's what he wished came out of his mouth. As he tries to muster up the rest of his rehearsed proposal, he mumbles and stumbles on each word. Nonsensical. "Marry you will me?" is more of an accurate recollection of Anjo's proposal. She says yes, surprising Anjo who expects that she would ask "Did you ask my parents?" Water dripping down their faces. Upon their return to the car, that's when Vina admitted she intended to ask if Anjo asked permission first. He met her parents prior to their Hawaii trip, respected their wishes, and waited until the time is right. Now, they cannot wait to spend this special day with you.
