A rental car is the best way to explore Iceland. There are areas that require a 4WD or a 4x4 vehicle due to the weather and terrain.
Weather is unpredictable in Iceland. Pack layers and comfortable walking/waterproof shoes! The average temperature at the end of May is 45-50° F.
Traveling in Iceland can be expensive, especially lodging, food, and gas. Luckily, there is a Costco in Gardabaer, a 14min drive south of Reykjavík! Go stock up on food/snacks that you can travel with for your trip.
Below is an estimated cost for a trip to Iceland:
- Roundtrip Flight: $600-$1200/person
- Hotel room (1 queen or 2 single beds): $100-$250/night
- Car rental: $200/day
- Gas: $8/gallon. Costco gas is $1/gallon less.
