We both had the week off and were spending it at my family’s lake house in Barnstead, NH. Most of our days were spent on the boat playing dominos, listening to music, and absorbing as much sun as possible. We talked about hiking up Mt Major, a lake house tradition, to enjoy the views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Little did Ang know, I had something planned for her when we reached the top. Friday morning came around and I was feeling pretty confident about the hike. Naturally, we weren’t on time due to some “unforeseen” circumstances (someone wanted to try hiking a different mountain and she was hungry). After about two hours, we reached the top. Hikers wanted to pet Dewey and all Ang wanted to do was sit down, chug water and map out all the islands using google maps. It was then that I felt the tears come on. Cry? Me? No? Not yet! I tried my best to get Ang to stand up so I could propose. “The views are better from over there!” “You should stand and stretch so your muscles don’t cramp up.” “Let’s head to that area, it looks flatter.” She wouldn’t budge from her spot. After all, she had what looked like the best view and the dogs bowl was resting perfectly on the rock so I’d say it was pretty flat. I decided to get down on one knee beside her. I had a whole proposal planned but all that came out was, “Will you Marry Me.” When she turned to me, she saw me holding a plastic ring that flew out of a confetti popper five years ago during our first Christmas together. At first she thought I was joking. It wasn’t until I pointed across the mountain to where two very special people were standing that she absolutely lost it. There, hiding behind the bushes, were June and Kevin (Ang’s parents). They jumped out screaming and cheering as they made their way over to us. Ang said yes, hikers on the mountain clapped, Kevin and June popped the champagne, and everyone celebrated.
