Around the Lake

Day Trips

Lakeside Restaurants

Lakeside Restaurants

Restaurants that we love around the lake are Lakeside, the Seebar at Linde, Lido for pizza, Schloss Seefels, Restaurant Maria Loretto, Sol Beach Club, Saag Ja, Seespitz, Pizzeria da Leopoldo, Goritschnig Velden, Jilly Beach, Kropfitschbad Restaurant, Werzers Badehaus, and Beachhouse Grill & Chill. And of course there's a wonderful restaurant, Restaurant Rose, located lakeside on the Villa Bulfon property. We highly recommend calling well in advance to secure a reservation.

Prosciutteria Dok Dall'Ava

Prosciutteria Dok Dall'Ava

Via Gemona 17, 33038 San Daniele del Friuli, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy
, +39 0432 940280

An easy drive from the Wörthersee, this prosciutto factory is a delicious destination. We visited here in 2018 together and loved every bite; prosciutto as an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Nearby, you can also check out the old town of San Daniele del Friuli where we recommend seeing the church Duomo San Michele Arcangelo, the city hall next to it, and the frescos in the chapel Sant'Antonio Abate.

Maria Wörth Church

Maria Wörth Church

Kirchenweg, 9082 Maria Wörth, Kärnten, Austria

You can take the ferry from the Schlosshotel Velden station (about a 10 minute walk from Villa Bulfon) to the Maria Worth station to visit this beautiful old church. A visit to Maria Wörth can also be combined with lunch, dinner, or just a cocktail at Linde Restaurant which also boasts panoramic views of the lake.

Taggenbrunn Winery

Taggenbrunn Winery

Taggenbrunn 9, 9300 Sankt Veit an der Glan, Kärnten, Austria
, +43 4212 30200

This vineyard is a 30 minute drive from the lake and was built on the remains of a 6th century B.C. Celtic/Roman village. On behalf of the Archbishop of Salzburg, Tagenus of Pongau built Taggenbrunn in the first half of the 12th century.

Pyramidenkogel Tower

Pyramidenkogel Tower

Linden 62, 9074 Keutschach am See, Kärnten, Austria
, +43 4273 2443

At 100 metres tall, it is the highest wooden viewing tower in the world. After walking up the 441 steps or riding the elevator, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Carinthia’s wonderful lakes and mountains. Have some fun on the way down with the indoor slide (the longest in Europe)!

Hochosterwitz Castle

Hochosterwitz Castle

1 Hochosterwitz, 9314 Launsdorf, Kärnten, Austria

Hochosterwitz, parts of which date back as far as 860, is considered one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles and features a beautiful view over the neighbouring mountains and countryside. As you walk up to the castle, you'll pass through the famous 14 gates. Since each of the gates is equipped with different treacherous methods of guarding the path, local legend maintains that the castle has never been conquered. We also love the old folktale that the castle was besieged in the 1340s by the troops of the Countess of Tyrol. According to the story, the defenders got the attackers to give up by throwing their last cow over the battlements, as if to indicate that they were flush with food and could hold out for a long time yet.

City of Klagenfurt

City of Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt is the capital of Carinthia and is the sixth-largest city in the country. Legend has it that Klagenfurt was founded after a couple of brave men slayed the "Lindwurm" (a dragon in the moors adjoining the lake). Make sure to check out the Lindwurm Fountain in the city center which commemorates this feat. From there walk along the Kramergasse to reach the Alter Platz which also holds the City Hall. Also worth visiting is the Klagenfurt Cathedral. For restaurants, we recommend Zum Augustin and Gasthaus im Landhaushof.

Dolomitenhütte Restaurant & Lodge

Dolomitenhütte Restaurant & Lodge

1 Dolomitenhütte, 9908 Tristach, Tirol, Austria
, +43 664 2253782

A restaurant located on the edge of cliff offers dramatic views, good food, and even better drinks. The Dolomitenhütte also serves starting point for several great hiking trails. Don't worry, the beer tastes just as good whether or not you just earned it.

Wörthersee Watersports

Wörthersee Watersports

, +43 664 1145195

Located just a 20 minute walk from Villa Bulfon, Wörthersee Watersports offers a variety of water activities such as waterskiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, tubing, or paddleboarding. Should you not want to walk there, give them a call and they can pick you up.

Lake Weissensee

Lake Weissensee

This is a beautiful lake Katharina grew up visiting on day-trips with her family. Because the operation of motor boats is prohibited except for 4 public transport vessels, the water is crystal clear and reaches drinking water quality. It is the highest situated Carinthian bathing lake so beware that the water is often cold but refreshing! You can hike on a trail along the perimeter and take a ride with the ferry.

Boat Rentals

Boat Rentals

1 Seecorso, 9220 Velden am Wörthersee, Kärnten, Austria

Everything from paddle boats to electric boats to luxury boats, Oehlwein Boats offers an array of ways to see the lake from the water. Please note that due to strict regulations to maintain the water quality of the lake, you may not be able to rent a motorboat.

Bled, Slovenia

Bled, Slovenia

Bled is a Slovenian resort town in the foothills of the Julian Alps. Don't miss the 11th-century Bled Castle, which is the oldest castle in Slovenia and sits on a cliff overlooking the lake. You can also take a rowboat to the small island in the lake's center and visit the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Maria. There is a legend that whoever rings the church's bell will have their wishes come true. For a stunning view of the lake, you can also hike to Mala Osojnica. For a sweet treat, eat a "cremeschnitte" at the Park Restaurant & Cafe.

Kärntner Golfclub Dellach

Kärntner Golfclub Dellach

3 Golfstraße, 9082 Maria Wörth, Kärnten, Austria
, +43 4273 2515

The "Kärntner Golfclub Dellach" is one of the oldest golf clubs in Austria (founded in 1927). In addition to its fantastic location above Lake Wörthersee a true plus of KGC Dellach is the historical aspect and the country club lifestyle. The course was designed by a French golf course architect as a 9-hole course. In 1954, the course was extended to an 18-hole course. The golf club now presents itself as a modern 18-hole course with enormous charm and even more landscape.

Monte Santo di Lussari

Monte Santo di Lussari

33018 Tarvisio, Providences of Udine, Italy, Italy

Just about an hours drive from Villa Bulfon, Monte Lussari is one of the oldest and highest pilgrimage destinations. After a 15 minute cable car ride up the mountain, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful church, savory Italian food in the charming village, and stunning views in every direction.

Bar 19null7

Bar 19null7

Domgasse 2, 9020 Klagenfurt, Austria

We had concerns about getting married somewhere without a rooftop bar. Luckily, Bar19null7 recognized the need and became Klagenfurt's first skybar, which is located at the top of the Moserverdino Hotel.

Udine, Italy

Udine, Italy

If you're looking for some Italian meals in a beautiful town, Udine is less than a 2 hour drive from the lake and makes the perfect day trip. While you're there, visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, the town hall "Loggia del Lionello" located in the oldest oldest square in Udine, Piazza Liberta, and Piazza San Giacomo. Also make sure to check out the Castle of Udine, which dates back to 983. The present building has the form of a palace and was built on the ruins of a fortress destroyed in 1511 from an earthquake. The external decoration of the palace and the paintings in the Parliament Hall are by Giovanni da Udine, one of the pupils of Raphael.

Casino Velden

Casino Velden

Casinoplatz, 9220 Velden am Wörthersee, Kärnten, Austria

If you're feeling lucky, stop by the Casino. It's just steps away from Villa Bulfon. There's also a restaurant, Die Yacht, that overlooks the water.

Grado, Italy

Grado, Italy

A seaside town with a Medieval aesthetic, Grado is a charming way to step back in time. Only a two hour drive from the Wörthersee, we recommend a pit stop in Aquileia to discover the ancient Roman ruins including a basilica dating back to the Fourth Century AD. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is believed to be the largest Roman city yet to be excavated.

Minimundus Park

Minimundus Park

Villacher Strasse 241, 9020 Klagenfurt, Carinthia, Austria

See the world in a day! Minimundus displays over 150 miniature models of architecture from around the globe, built at a ratio of 1:25.

Venice, Italy

Venice, Italy

Venice is a 3 hour drive or a train ride away and there is so much beauty to explore! Key places to note are St. Marks Square, St. Mark's Basilica, Palazzo Ducale (the Doges' palace), the Bridge of Sighs, and the Rialto Bridge. You can also climb the Campanile di San Marco, a bell tower with beautiful views of the city. And of course your visit wouldn't be complete without a gondola ride through the canals! Also, if you have time, you can hop aboard a vaporetto for a ride to Murano, home of Venice's famous glass workers.

Bike Rides

Bike Rides

Biking is also a great way to tour the lake. Uran Bike shop is an 8-minute walk from Villa Bulfon and has everything from e-bikes to mountain bikes. Additionally, NextBike is a bike-sharing system that is also available to you during your time on the Wörthersee. Learn more here: https://www.nextbike.at/en/klagenfurt/

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor Activities

For the hiking enthusiasts, there are some great hikes on the lake or within an hour drive. For hikes outside the Wörthersee, we recommend Gerlitzen Alpe and Bad Kleinkirchheim. During the winter, both serve as ski resorts and have beautiful views of the Millstätter See. For some action, you can visit the Sommer-Rodelbahn Nocky-Flitzer which is almost like an Alpine roller coaster.
