We cannot recommend the Montague Bookmill enough! The Bookmill is an independent bookstore located in a historic 1834 grist mill. The store's motto is "Books you don't need in a place you can't find," and it claims to have "40,000 books and one waterfall." There's also a cafe (The Lady Killigrew) and and a record store (Turn It Up!) next door.
The BEST pizza place in the area and a staple of Michael's experience at UMass Amherst. Antonio's is a casual pizzeria, located in downtown Amherst, serves traditional thin-crust and Sicilian pies, with a ton of options for toppings. Some favorites are the BBQ chicken bacon ranch, avocado quesadilla, and spinach pesto.
Mt. Sugarloaf has excellent hiking and offers a stunning view of the Connecticut River and surrounding area. The summit, which is also accessibly by car, has a pavilion for scenic viewing and picnicking. There are 5 trails with a variety of lengths and difficulties. The South Sugarloaf trail is the most popular one - a moderate 1.4-mile loop.
The Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory & Gardens, located in South Deerfield, consists of an 18,400-square foot facility that includes a 8,000-sq. ft. glass conservatory filled with butterflies, moths and tropical vegetation. It also has an on-site food court and gift shop. Admission is $16 for adults.
The Emily Dickinson Museum is a historic house museum and birthplace and home of 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson, whose poems were discovered in her bedroom there after her death. Admission is $16 for either general admission access or a 45 minute guided tour of the homestead.
