Question

Q9:

Answer

What events are taking place at Bled? On Wednesday, August 27th, we will be visiting Bled to partake in the beautiful traditions of the island. This will include travelling by pletna boat to the island, where John will carry Andie up the 99 steps to the Church of the Assumption. Here they will ring the wishing bell for a lifetime of luck, happiness and love. At this time, we will not be holding a private religious ceremony at the Church of the Assumption on the island. Following the traditions, we recommend treating yourself to a slice, or two, of local Potica on the island and visiting the island museum. Off the island, we recommend visiting Bled Castle, a thousand-year-old cliff-side fairytale fortress that looks out from a high precipice above the lake, and walking the hour-long scenic trail around the lake, to take in the magic of Bled.

Question

Q10:

Answer

What is the historical significance of Bled? Lake Bled is a glacial lake fed by hot springs with a majestic backdrop of the Julian Alps. The heart of the lake is the church-topped islet, that can only be reached by boat. Pletna are non-motorized, flat-bottomed wooden boats powered by trained oarsmen that ferry visitors to and from the enchanted island. The history of Bled Island traces back to prehistoric and Slavic settlements. The first brick built church was consecrated in 1142, eventually rebuilt in Gothic and then Baroque style, with the current shape preserved since the 17th century. The main altar is rich with gold-plated carvings, with the central altarpiece depicting the sitting Mother Divine, and side altars consecrated to St. Sebastian, St. Magdalene and St. Ana. The sound of bells and notable ‘wishing bell’, echoing across the lake come from the bell tower built in the 15th century. According to legend, a young widow who lived in Bled Castle had a bell made for the island church in memory of her deceased husband. The bell never arrived however due to a storm that struck the boat causing the bell to sink to the bottom of the lake, where it is still said to be to this day. After the widow's passing, the Pope consecrated a new bell from the Vatican and sent it to Bled Island. It is said that whoever rings the bell and sends a wish to the merciful ‘lady from the lake’, will have their wish fulfilled.
