We Swiped Right: A First Date Story by Amy Bartkowiak

Thursday, November 3, 2016

It's the classic story. Girl sees guy; swipes right. Guy sees girl; swipes right. And boom, it's a match! After a number of Bumble dates that ranged from meh to absurd, I came across Kevin's profile. Who was this cute, snarky guy who liked sandwiches? I sent him what I thought was a brilliant quip about a picture of him holding a baby at a bar ("Do you always pick up babes at bars?). He totally missed the reference but was intrigued nonetheless. Our first date was at Hopfields, a beer bar that happened to be within walking distance of Kevin's apartment (though he drove to avoid a sweaty hello). He was there before me. Punctual. I like punctual. We hit it off right away and talked our way through three rounds. He walked me to my car and kissed me in the parking lot. That date was followed by another a few nights later where Kevin fed me lies about the outcome of the upcoming presidential election. But even after that, I wanted to see him again, so we had another date, and another, and another. And we're still not sick of each other ...

Savannah Nights: An Engagement Tale by Kevin Feldman

Saturday, February 24th, 2018

After conspiring with Amy's BFF Marisa and my old friend Caitlin, I pulled the trigger on purchasing the perfect-ish ring. Now the only thing to decide would be ...when to ask the question that led to you all reading this story. We had an upcoming trip planned to Savannah Georgia, which was to be our first trip together that didn't involve friends or family. I saw it as the perfect time to ask my best friend to also be my family. Amy made reservations for us to get dinner at a chic restaurant in town called The Grey. Our Saturday night was coming together. At first, I toyed with the idea of a post-dinner proposal but decided against it. Would you be comfortable eating a fine, expensive dinner with that hanging over your head? Dinner was scheduled about an hour after Amy's church obligations ended at the beautiful St. John the Baptist. I pulled up the ol' Google Maps and saw that it was a very pleasant 20 minute walk from the church to the restaurant and there just so happen to be a lovely park square in the center of our path. That's where I knew I'd ask her to marry me. I insisted on wearing a sports jacket, much to dismay of Amy who knew I'd be too hot. I did this to conceal the ring box in the jacket. Anywhere else on my person would be too obvious. As a side note, I was very warm - She was right but this was my burden as the bearer of the ring. Anyways, I guided us from the church, to what appeared to be the perfect bench in the park. We took in the whole scene and the characters who wandered by. I kept waiting for the coast to be clear, making the sweetest, nervous small talk I could muster. I couldn't wait any longer. As we got up to leave, I said "Hey...I have a question for you" as I got down in the classic position and asked the question that millions have asked before. She said yes. Epilogue: We were too flustered to order dinner after the proposal so I asked the waitress to just bring us whatever she wanted. Amy ate meat.
