We went here in May 2025 for a day trip. This is a great option for a day trip to experience a wide variety of African wildlife all in the same place. They also have the Wonder Cave you can explore, which is the largest cave in Gauteng! The reserve is located 1.5 hours from the wedding venue.
For anyone wanting to walk with the cheetahs and see Mufasa, Simba, Timon and Pumba close up, this is the place to visit ... even Amy can attest to the experience of touching a cheetah on the head! The sanctuary is located 1 hour from the wedding venue.
The Pilanesberg is a 3.5 hour drive from the airport and a 2.5 hour drive from the venue and is home to elephants, lions, leopards and rhinos. It is where Connor took Amy on her first African Safari in December 2023! There are plenty of options to stay in and around the park. We stayed at Bakubung Bush Lodge and would highly recommend it! You can arrange game drives into the park or choose to drive yourself.
This is the perfect spot for anyone wanting to experience the wildlife, sunshine, festivities, and general atmosphere that South Africa has to offer. The resort is located adjacent to the Pilanesburg National Park and has everything you can think of! Additionally, if you've ever watched the movie "Blended" starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore - this is the location at which the movie was filmed!
Kruger National Park, in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. It is about a 4 hour drive from the airport. We'd highly recommend staying at or near anyone of the following camps: Lower Sabie, Olifants, Skukuza. There are however countless options ranging from "very rustic" to absolute African luxury. The park is a 5 hour drive from the wedding venue.
Cape Town is about a 2 hour flight from Johannesburg and is a must see if you have the time! We spent a week in Cape Town in December 2023 and would highly recommend hiking Lions Head, taking the gondola to the top of Table Mountain, visiting the beautiful beaches of Clifton and experiencing the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. There is no shortage of things to do and see in Cape Town, so if you'd like a more detailed recommendation list, please shout!
