We hit it off from the very first date. We met for the first time for a lunch date at Olive Garden in St. George, Utah. We had already matched on an online dating website, but we had a mutual friend that recommended we go out (shout out to Cassie Braswell!). Our lunch date turned into lunch AND frozen yogurt at Menchie's. After some dessert, we still weren't ready to end our date, so we decided to head to Fiesta Fun for some arcade games and a drive. After we finally decided to end our afternoon and evening together, we drove our separate ways home. Following that first date, we decided it was March 7, 2019, we were talking every single day. The conversations rarely seemed to end day by day, but just picked back up where we left off the night before. Within a couple weeks, Scott asked Amber to be his steady girlfriend. We've been together since. (:
Scott pulled the most perfect proposal I could've dreamed of in the High Uintas Wilderness. We were going on a backpacking trip with some of my family over the weekend and I kept thinking how amazing it would be if we got engaged. The morning we were leaving, I hinted to my mom, "hey... so uh... do you know if Scott has talked to Dad lately about... anything?" and my mom replied, "No, not that I know of, and Dad would've told me." I was a little disappointed, but that wasn't going to ruin my weekend in the beautiful High Uintas! (Sidebar: turns out right before we left he had snuck back into the house and asked my parents for their blessing!) We ended up going on a different backpacking trip that we had planned, but it was still an perfect day to hike in and everyone had a great time. We set up camp just before sunset and fixed some backpacker meals. I had promised I was going to teach Scott how to fish, so Scott prompted me to hurry and eat so we could cast a couple lines out before it got dark. Right around dusk, we head out for to the lake right next to our campsite (funny enough, I had to remind Scott to bring the fishing gear), and I go into all this detail about proper casting technique. Scott tells me to hold on saying, "Let's get a picture here first," so I go over to him and my brother-in-law is ready for the photo at this gorgeously picturesque mountain lake covered in lily pads. We took a smiling picture, then Scott suggested a kissing picture. My heart started to beat fast and a click happened in my brain. Scott looked me straight in the eyes and held both of my hands, he spoke some of the sweetest, most special, dear to my heart words of love I've ever heard. He got down on one knee, pulled out a ring, and asked if I would marry him. Without any hesitation in my soul, I promised him I would, he slid a gorgeous ring on my finger and I could've burst with joy. Now, here we are: engaged and beyond ecstatic to become husband and wife.
I'd been thinking about the perfect time to propose to Amber for a while. I was initially planning on it on our trip to Amsterdam with a group of friends, but we unfortunately experienced travel restriction due to COVID. An opportunity opened up when her family wanted to do a backpacking trip in the High Uintas Wilderness. I found the perfect ring for her and kept it a secret for few months. Whenever she was not home, I would play with the diamond ring and the sunlight. I was sure she was going to be very happy with it. I was also a little jealous that she gets to keep it and not me. No one knew about my plans on proposing, except for my best friend Cortney- she helped me with all questions I had about proposing. On the day we were backpacking, I waited until Amber was not present. I saw her parents- today was the perfect day for me to propose to her, and asked for their blessing. They were thrilled and happy to hear it. We arrived at Granddaddy Lake trailhead, but it was closed due to an active fire nearby. Her brother, Nick, thankfully decided to go to a nearby trail to Cuberant Lakes- I was relieved that there was still a chance for me to propose. After taking wrong turns from my "expert navigation" skills, we finally made it to the trailhead and started the hike. It was a perfect clear sky, colorful leaves, and fresh air. I had my eyes peeled for the perfect setting. After passing a beautiful meadow and a couple smaller lakes, we found a nice lake surrounded by tall trees and full of lily pads on the water. It was the spot! At sunset, I told Amber that I wanted to go fishing before it gets too dark. She grabbed her fishing pole and we all went to the lake, I asked for a few pictures of Amber and I together. I then told her my feelings, got on one knee and asked her to marry me. She said YES! We were all so happy. Everyone slept outside- we watched the stars until we fell asleep. It was a perfect day! I am very happy that I get to keeps such a wonderful woman.
