Morgantown is Ry's hometown, and a place that's near and dear to his heart. Morgantown is situated along the Monongahela River in the north central part of the state nestled in the lovely Appalachian Mountains. Home to West Virginia University, Morgantown boats a vibrant small town life and lively nightlife for a city of 29,660. Morgantown has numerous small shops and place of interest for those looking to experience a bit more of Ry's roots.
Pittsburgh is located in the southwest of the state, at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. Pittsburgh is known both as "the Steel City" for its more than 300 steel-related businesses and as the "City of Bridges" for its 446 bridges. The city features 30 skyscrapers, two inclined railways, a pre-revolutionary fortification and the Point State Park at the confluence of the rivers. The city developed as a vital link of the Atlantic coast and Midwest. In 2015, Pittsburgh was listed among the "eleven most livable cities in the world"; The Economist's Global Liveability Ranking placed Pittsburgh as the most or second-most livable city in the United States in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014. If you're looking for city activities, Pittsburgh is the area's hub. It's got great museums, restaurants, and sports. For baseball fans, the Pirates will unfortunately be playing away the weekend of 7/24 (in SF ironically).
* NOTE: BOOK TICKETS IN ADVANCE! * Fallingwater is a house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, 43 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The house was built partly over a waterfall on Bear Run, located in the Laurel Highlands of the Allegheny Mountains. The house was designed as a weekend home for the family of Liliane and Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., owner of Kaufmann's Department Store. After its completion, Time called Fallingwater Wright's "most beautiful job," and it is listed among Smithsonian's "Life List of 28 places to visit before you die." The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. In 1991, members of the American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater the "best all-time work of American architecture" and in 2007, it was ranked 29th on the list of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA.
Coopers Rock State Forest is a 12,747-acre state forest in Monongalia and Preston counties in West Virginia. Its southern edge abuts Cheat Lake and the canyon section of Cheat River, a popular whitewater rafting river in the eastern United States. Coopers Rock provides a diverse array of recreational opportunities. The forest is best known for its scenic overlooks of the Cheat River in Cheat Canyon (Google maps: "Coopers Rock overlook"). It provides excellent views of the Cheat, Snake Hill Wildlife Management Area across the river, and Morgantown to the west. For a more rustic view, many people take the approximately 2-mile hike to Raven Rock. Coopers Rock is home to a well-developed system of nearly 50 miles of hiking trails.
The Andy Warhol Museum is located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh, PA. It is the largest museum in North America dedicated to a single artist. The museum holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives from the Pittsburgh-born pop art icon Andy Warhol. The Andy Warhol Museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and is a collaborative project of the Carnegie Institute, the Dia Art Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The museum is located in an 88,000-square-foot facility on seven floors. Containing 17 galleries, the museum features 900 paintings, close to 2,000 works on paper, over 1,000 published unique prints, 77 sculptures, 4,000 photographs, and over 4,350 Warhol films and videotaped works.
Located on the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Close to major metropolitan areas and offering vast choices of activities, Ohiopyle State Park attracts millions of visitors annually. Passing through the heart of the park, the rushing waters of the Youghiogheny [yawki-gay-nee] River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle. The “Yough” [yawk] provides some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery. Ohiopyle is the southern gateway into the Laurel Highlands and represents the beautiful natural resources and unique sense of community that visitors can find throughout the region.
