Dia de Muertos originated in what we call Mexico as a pre-Columbian, Mesoamerican ritual, celebrating both life and death. These holy days were once a month-long ceremony; nowadays celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is today a fusion of indigenous, Catholic, and modern beliefs, honoring the passing of our loved ones and the cycles of existence as we know them, through food, drink, beautiful ofrendas, marigolds, candles, candies, song, poems, and spending time together.
There will be a light snack (vegan and non-vegan option) at the initial wedding ceremony. We are asking local guests to contribute with a sweet or savory treat for the Dia de Muertos potluck & pachanga. We ask that if you wish to contribute, to sign your name for either "sweet" or "savory" on the link we will send with invitation, so we have a balance of treats! We will be providing a vegan and non-vegan option, and beverages (alcoholic and non) as well.
Cocktail Hour at The Double will be a cash/card bar. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided at the Dia de Muertos afterparty.
If you are bringing a shareable treat, please come drop it off at our home (2222 N Kimball Avenue) before the ceremony, which begins at dusk, 4:30pm. Then, walk 3 blocks west to Paradise Community Garden for the ceremony. If you are not bringing a shareable treat, please meet us at Paradise Community Garden at 4:30pm. Following the ceremony, we will walk together 3 blocks north to The Double Urban Tavern for a cocktail hour. From here, we will walk back to our home (a total of 6 blocks) for our annual Dia de Muertos potluck & pachanga at 8:30pm. We will have food, fog, fire, and fantastic fun.
The entire celebration is taking place in Logan Square, Chicago. The closest CTA train stop is the Logan Square stop on the Blue Line (Spaulding exit). It's either a 15-20 minute walk from the station, or hop on the #82 bus at Kimball and Schubert (3 blocks from train entrance) going south. Out of towners: ask us if you need help acquiring a Ventra card if you are using public transport. The closest bus stop to us is Kimball and Palmer on the #82 Kimball bus (N/S). The #74 Fullerton bus (E/W) is also close by. There is street parking on Kimball Avenue, Fullerton Avenue, Palmer Street, and perhaps some other smaller streets. If you need to park a car, arrive early to find a spot.
Wear what makes you feel fancy and bombastic. If you want to be festive and honor the haunted season, please feel free.
