Things To Do

Château de Lacoste (Venue)

Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24250, France

This is the venue/accommodation location. It's the most southern location on the map (at the very center bottom, left of 'Domme'). You can see where the other locations are relative to the "home" point.

The Marqueyssac Gardens (Les Jardins de Marqueyssac)

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac, Vezac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24220, France
, +33 5 53 31 36 36

9 minute drive from venue (5.7km) Les Jardins de Marqueyssac in the village of Vazac is a truly amazing garden which is listed as a National Historical Monument,. It has more than 6 kilometers of shaded paths, edged with 150,000 hand-pruned boxwoods which are over 100 years old.

La-Roque Gageac River viewpoint

La Roque-Gageac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24250, France

La Roque-Gageac is in a magnificent location. Often little more than a row of riverside houses squeezed between the Dordogne river in front and sheltered below the overhanging cliffs behind, it is truly a 'picture postcard' village. In other places the medieval houses find space to spread up the hill a little, towards the troglodyte caves set in the cliffs above. The troglodyte fort set in the cliffs 40 metres above La Roque Gageac is fascinating, and significant vestiges of the 12th century construction are still standing. The narrow streets of La Roque-Gageac also pass through an interesting tropical garden as they climb. The palm trees and banana plants are possible to grow because the village is south facing and protected from north winds by the cliffs. Not surprisingly, this great beauty, and being a 'most beautiful village of France', and winning the 'prettiest village in France contest' competition, and being in the heart of the Dordogne.

Beynac-et-Cazenac Kayaking

Gabarres de Beynac, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24220, France
, 00 33 (0)5 53 28 51 15

The incredible village of Beynac is spread along the northern bank of the Dordogne river and where the 100 year war took place. Take a walk up the steep winding streets up the hill to the impressive castle perched above. Through the main 'street' up the hill is the basket-makers path (Carnival del Panieraires). Even if you have no interest in the magnificent views across miles of beautiful countryside you will surely want to stand in the same spot as Richard the Lionheart, and admire the surrounding scenery! Beynac is a good starting point for many river activities e.g. canoeing and fishing, and activities such as walking and cycling in the Dordogne region.

Canoë Dordogne

Les Ecoles, Roque Gageac 24250, France
, 00 33 (0)5 53 29 58 50

10 minute drive (6.8 km from venue)

Canoës Vacances

La Peyssière, La Roque Gageac 24250, France
, 00 33 (0)5 53 28 17 07

13 minute drive (8.2km from venue)

Gouffre de Proumeyssac

Route De Proumeyssac, Audrix, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24260, France
, 05 53 07 27 47

33 minute drive north of Chateau du Lacoste (30 km). Near Le Bugue, approximatelt 30km from Sarlat a little north of the Dordogne River at Limeuil, the caves at Proumeyssac are highly renowned. The main feature is the enormous 'Cathedral of Crystal' - a stunning, huge and beautifully lit cavern. You can pay extra and enter by a suspended basket lowered by a horse, the traditional method!

Sarlat-la-Canéda

Sarlat-la-Canéda, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24200, France

Beautiful Sarlat has some of the best preserved 14th century buildings in France. The town centre has narrow streets between the old stone buildings. This area is full of shops, cafes and restaurants. The Sarlat Street Market is every Wednesday & Saturday at the Place de la Liberte, Sarlat-la-Caneda. This market is wonderful - colourful, vibrant and interesting. It’s one of the best markets in the South of France. The local produce is varied and wonderful. The brightly colored canopies of the stalls add to the already spectacular sight of the medieval buildings around which the market is situated.

Lascaux Caves

Lascaux Avenue, Montignac-Lascaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine 24290, France
, +33 (0) 5 53 50 99 10

These internationally renowned caves are situated about 30km north of Sarlat, The visit to the Lascaux caves is a guided visit and the guides are very knowledgeable and interesting. The first part of the visit is into a sort of mini museum in the 'rock' and in here the guide describes the location and history of the caves, the methods and pigments used by pre-historic man to paint the caves and the methods used by modern man to recreate them.
