How We Met

Sometimes true love can be found where you least expect it.

I was pursuing my graduate degree in social work and the final requirement was a full time, unpaid internship in a practical setting under the supervision of a professional the University approved. I was set up and ready to start at a local school district, when the week before the start date my supervisor became ill and informed me she was unable to take any interns. The only placement with an opening left was the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, or The County Jail. I was so nervous when I started and in a male dominated environment such as that, new college-aged female interns get a lot of un-solicited attention. I quickly learned to keep my head down and just focus on my work. Many officers attempted to spark conversation and offer phone numbers but one officer in particular always got my attention. He was so intriguing, not only because he never overstepped his boundaries, and never attempted to hit on me, but because he always tipped his head when passing me, in a traditional gentleman-like fashion and because when I would walk by him, he would turn his head and almost break his neck to see me like I was a type of beauty he had never seen. As my internship came to an end, I knew I had to do something so I approached him and gave him my number. He called me and said he had been wanting to ask me for my number but didn’t know if it was appropriate and when the last day of my internship was. We talked a few times over the next week and then stopped. When I graduated and passed the state board licensing exam I was offered a position with BCADC, and since I had done my internship there, I felt comfortable with my professional skills and experience so I accepted the position and began work in the middle of July. My first day back at the Jail I saw Noe, he saw me and as soon as my shift ended I texted him. He said his phone broke earlier in the summer and he didn’t have my number so he had no way to reach me. We have been inseparable since.
