Things To Do

Here are some recommendations for places we like in Grand Rapids -- everything from outdoor gardens and museums to places to grab breakfast and lunch and spots to get coffee, beer, ice cream, and books!

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

1000 East Beltline Avenue Northeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49525

Probably the biggest attraction in Grand Rapids -- great spot to spend an afternoon when the weather is good.

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum

303 Pearl Street Northwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Grand Rapids' favorite son and accidental president. Both East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids claim him as their own. Joel wonders what all the fuss is about. Allyson likes the Betty Ford parts the best.

Grand Rapids Public Museum

272 Pearl Street Northwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Joel has never been here, and it's been years since Allyson has visited, but it has a great 1928 carousel and is popular with kids. There is also a planetarium.

John Ball Zoo

1300 Fulton Street West, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Fun for kids and adults who like animals.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market

435 Ionia Avenue Southwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

A classic bougie market hall with tons of vendors. Lots of options for lunch or dinner!

Madcap Coffee Company

98 Monroe Center Street Northwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Joel likes the downtown location best.

Lumber Baron Bar

187 Monroe Avenue Northwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

Great wood-paneled spot for cocktails. Gives off "robber baron" vibes. Located inside the historic Pantlin Hotel (now the Amway Grand Plaza), which has an atmospheric lobby.

Founders Brewing Co

235 Cesar E. Chavez Avenue Southwest, Grand Rapids, MI 49503

A pilgrimage site for beer lovers. It's a big operation.

Vivant Brewery & Spirits

925 Cherry Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49506

Belgian-style beers in an old funeral home chapel.

Squibb Coffee and Wine Bar

1035 Wealthy Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49506

More good coffee.

Brass Ring Brewing

2404 Eastern Avenue Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49507

Known for British-style beers and real cask ales.

Furniture City Creamery

958 Cherry Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49506

Terrific ice cream and a popular spot for the kiddos (and Joel).

Wolfgang's Restaurant

1530 Wealthy Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49506

Great spot for a good diner-style breakfast!

Horrocks Market

4455 Breton Road Southeast, Kentwood, MI 49508

Not just a grocery store -- you gotta see it to believe it. Also free coffee and terrific popcorn (in lots of varieties).

Schuler Books Grand Rapids

2660 28th Street Southeast, Grand Rapids, MI 49512

Lots of new books and a decent used books section. Fun to browse. Also good merch.
