In November of 2016, what started as an ordinary Wednesday turned into the beginning of everything. A friend and I walked to the McDonald’s down the road from our school, both of us dressed in our ROTC uniforms. Sitting there was him. I walked up, pointed blankly at the uniform, and asked, “Are you really in the military, or is it just the same as me?” He looked at me like I had three heads—but he answered anyway. I sat down, we talked, and before I left, I asked how to get in touch with him. From that moment on, we became inseparable. What started as casual conversations quickly turned into a friendship built on laughter, trust, and showing up for one another—every single time. A few years later, life hit hard. During one of the toughest periods I’ve ever faced, he was the constant. When everything felt unstable, he stayed steady. When I felt alone, he made sure I wasn’t. Somewhere in the middle of all that, without any grand realization or dramatic moment, I knew. I knew that one day, I’d find my way to marrying him. What I didn’t know then was that he felt the same way all along. Now, here we are—no longer two kids in uniforms at a McDonald’s, but best friends choosing each other every day, ready to start the next chapter together.
