It all began on August 6, 2017, in the heart of Toronto, Canada, during the vibrant Caribana festival. Amidst the music and energy Derrick approached Aliyah. She shyly declined, suggesting he find someone else to entertain. But he replied with a smile "Why would I entertain anyone else? I came over here for you." That moment sparked something beautiful. They exchanged numbers and after a few weeks of heartfelt conversations, Derrick made the first move -- traveling 385.3 miles from Buffalo, New York to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Despite the long distance, their connection only deepened, and after two years of countless calls, road trips, and shared dreams, they decided it was time to take the next step. In 2020 Aliyah moved to Buffalo, and they began building a life together. Their love remained strong through the challenges of the pandemic, and in 2022 they welcomed their greatest blessing-- their beautiful daughter Alaya. She became the sweetest reminder of the love they share. On December 7, 2024 surrounded by memories of their love, Derrick got down on one knee and asked Aliyah to be his forever, and without hesitation she said YES!
