We were introduced by our mutual friend, Mark Clayton, on Tim's birthday. Mark invited Alison to join a group of his friends, and meet up at Brothers Bar and Grill in Newport, Kentucky on a Thursday night for drinks on the patio. Everyone was new to Alison since she had just moved back from Chicago; Tim was among them. Nothing special happened right away, but Alison remembers being struck by Tim's bright blue eyes when they were introduced, and Tim remembers talking and getting to know each other. They hung out more and more, and became good friends. Though there was some flirting between Alison and Tim in the beginning, it went no further and they remained just friends. A few years later, they realized they had some feelings beyond friendship. After they had some time to think about what that meant, they talked. Neither of them wanted a serious relationship at the time, but they enjoyed each other's company so they continued to hang out with no course set for their relationship. Several months after that, they became official after realizing their feelings had grown and that they didn't want to be without each other. As their relationship grew stronger and lasting over time, they realized they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
Tim had already been looking at rings to propose when he and Alison learned they would have a small time frame to ensure that her brother Patrick, his wife, Elizabeth, and their kids, Luke and Lydia, who live in England while he serves in the Air Force there, would be in the States to be at their wedding. Not wanting to risk celebrating their day without them, Alison and Tim kicked things into high gear. They started quietly planning their day, no ring, and only an "understood" engagement, with just over four months to get it all done. It became a running joke amongst the small group in the know. “I really hope you get that ring!” “We’re going to have a wedding whether we ever get engaged or not!”
As plans, thankfully, started falling swiftly into place, Tim worked with jewelers and Alison's sister, Clare, to design the ring. Getting it just right was important to him and it was taking longer than expected. Alison told him he could just propose without a ring, but Tim wanted it to be special. So as time started running out on the clock that allowed them to keep their plans a secret, Tim got a beautiful ring on loan from the jeweler. He proposed to her on a gray and rainy Wednesday evening (perfect weather in her mind) in Covington, Kentucky beside the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge. She said, "Yes," of course! They look forward to their next chapter, and to beginning it by celebrating their special day with their loved ones!
