How We Met

Right now, we are both in school at the University of North Carolina to attain doctorate degrees. So, it’s only fitting that we met at a summer educational program at the University of Virginia in 2014. We met during the first week of the program after a long day of class. Al was sitting at a picnic table outside of Bice House, a dorm on the University of Virginia’s campus, diligently studying for a personal training exam she scheduled for the following month. Walking by the picnic table with a group of his hallmates and roommates, B sat down and introduced himself. We quickly realized a commonality - we both enjoyed working out. Al was planning to go to the gym later that day and invited him to tag along. Al: So, he agreed to go to the gym with me and I told him I would text him before I left so we could walk together. Well, I texted him, and he never responded. So, I decided to go by myself. As I was leaving the dorm we were all staying in, he was walking out the door himself! B: No comment (I was nervous). Also - she tried to go by herself too! We did (no thanks to B) end up walking to the gym together and instantly became inseparable. For the next 6 weeks, we spent all our off time together. We worked out together, studied together, tried almost every restaurant within walking distance of UVA’s campus (B still dreams of the Oreo Pancakes @ Fig) and even went to Washington DC together. The program was only 6 weeks long but we had a feeling that our relationship could last much longer than that!

The Pre-Proposal

Al: Earlier in the year, B and I discussed what a crazy year we had coming up. My sister was getting married, he would be applying for residency, I was going to be swamped with schoolwork-so, we both agreed this year was probably not the best year to get married...meaning that I had no idea this was coming. B: Yeah… so anyways, I bought a ring. Within the first two weeks of buying the ring I knew I had to propose quickly because I had minor arrhythmias every time Al neared my hiding spot. I knew I wanted to propose at the Coker Arboretum since Al loves nature (she makes up her own names for trees) and we really enjoy walking around that particular area of campus. It was also important that I had a way to share the moment with our friends and family due to the ongoing pandemic. I recalled that some of our family friends, Samantha & Graham, were involved with wedding photography (shameless plug: http://anagramphoto.com/). So, I contacted them for help! Al: B and I had barely seen each other that week, I had a crazy work week and he had just started on his acting internship rotation. Early in the week, he suggested we do something fun for a date on Friday because he felt like his rotation was going to be hectic and he wanted something to look forward to. I made reservations at Carolina Inn for dinner and drinks on Friday. That Friday, I babysat all afternoon and when I finished babysitting, I headed down to Franklin Street to meet B for dinner. B: Naturally, I decided to propose during one of the busiest times of medical school, my acting internship. I spent my day in the hospital rounding on my patients and chatting with each of them about my proposal plan. Al and I had planned to spend our Friday evening together since we were both busy throughout the week. I suggested grabbing dinner, then having some drinks before going on a promenade in the area of the arboretum. I selected a gorgeous Beautybush tree which would be the site of the big question.

The Actual Proposal

April 30th, 2021

Al: When I got downtown, B suggested we walk around campus first before heading for drinks. This was not out of the ordinary, we love walking campus on the weekends. Plus, I had made a late reservation in case B ran late at the hospital, so we had plenty of time. B: For the first time in her life, Al was late since she hit traffic on the way back home from babysitting. I was so anxious about having time to propose before the sunset. I remember making up some excuse to go on our walk first. Al: As we were walking, B appeared very enthusiastic about his clinical rotation, he was animated and talkative as he discussed his day. We ended up walking through the arboretum on campus. Again, not out of the ordinary. It was spring in Chapel Hill and the flowers and trees were in full bloom. B: Yeah so… I “blacked out” during our walk. All I recall was being extremely nervous, continuously feeling for the ring, and talking a bunch to distract Al from the plan! Al: We walked through the arboretum, pointing out flowers and trees we liked. B pointed to a tree behind me so I turned to look at it, when I turned back around he was on one knee. [this is where I blacked out] B: When I got on one knee, I peeked behind me and saw the lens of Graham’s camera. I thought to myself “it's game time.” I looked at Al and felt at peace when I saw her luminous smile. I'm not exactly sure everything I said after that but I do remember saying “Alison Kramer Nulty will you marry me?”
