One of our favorites – Rasnov is a stunning mountain citadel set high in the hills above Brasov. Visit, enjoy the beautiful views, see the working artisans still making a living in the walls of the castle, and fill your lungs with fresh mountain air. Unforgettable
ViewPurportedly the home of one of the greatest villains ever to stalk our nightmares, the shadowy Count Dracula, Bran Castle is, in reality, a strategic Saxon fortress dating back to 1377 . Visiting, therefore, gives you the chance both to explore a monumental Schloss at the junction of the mountains and valleys in the very center of Romania and to test your mettle (and capacity for Dracula -related merchandise!) as you try and make it around the castle without flinching at every twitch of the drapes and chill gust of wind
ViewIt cost the equivalent of $120 million to build it, and in the forty years it took, the Queen estimated she heard 14 different languages spoken by the various international experts drawn together to create the finest Royal palace of the modern era. It has a retractable stained-glass roof, built-in vacuum cleaners (in 1914!), and a home cinema decorated by family friend Gustav Klimt. You really should try and visit if you can!
ViewThe Transfagarasan highway was finished and inaugurated in September, 1974. One other interesting fact is that on this road you'll find the longest mountain tunnel in Romania. measuring 887 meters in length and and 4.4 meters in hight. The Capra-Bâlea tunnel was dug into the rock with 20 tons of dynamite. Many might recognize this as the road Jeremy Clarkson said to be "The world's best road" in one Top Gear episode , dropping the fabulous Stelvio Pass from first to second place.
ViewTransylvania is well known for its rich deposits of rock salt which were formed 13.5 million years ago when the area was a shallow sea with a tropical climate. Over time, layers of sediment formed on top, leaving the salt layer buried approximately 1.2 km deep (3,937 ft). Much of the subsoil of Transylvania features a layer of salt approximately 400 metres thick (1,312 ft). The salt mines gained a particular reputation for their health benefits. Following the extraction of the salt, large underground voids were formed which featured a unique saline micro-climate. It features relatively constant temperatures of between 14-16 C and low humidity of 66-70%. There is higher atmospheric pressure than at the surface and the air is strongly ionized. This is particularly effective in treating respiratory diseases and a wellness center operates at the mine. Horizon 50 is located over a kilometer and a half from the entrance at a depth of 120 meters (393 ft). Visitors are taken to it by bus.
