It Started With A Swipe

Our Tinder Testimony: Written by Alicia

I had just returned from covering the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for a month and work let me have a week off to recover. In between sleeping, naps and more sleeping -- I reluctantly decided to re-download Tinder and Bumble and get back on the online dating scene in Austin. I started swiping and Tommy's profile popped up. One of the first pictures was him with this huge grin and dimples showing. I clicked into his profile a bit more and there's another picture of him holding his newborn nephew. Swoon. So I swiped right (for all of you who don't understand this jibberish, swiping right means you want to connect with them.) And my phone instantly alerted me that he had also swiped right -- we were a match! I waited an hour and then messaged him on the app first. It's worth noting that I had been on some very very bad Tinder dates (Tommy, as I would come to find out, had also been on some horror dates) so while I was excited about chatting with him at first, I didn't want to get my hopes up. In fact, I had to bail on our first date as I got called into work that weekend! But to make up for it, I gave Tommy my phone number. We rescheduled for a Tuesday evening and then I had to break the news to him that I had to be in bed by 8:00 p.m. that night since I worked the morning shift. Poor guy got canceled on and then I gave him like a 1-hour max date window. We met for dinner and drinks and that 1-hour window turned into 5 hours of talking, laughing and a goodnight kiss. I've truly been so in love with that man ever since. P.S. I will never let it down that I messaged him first.

How He Asked

A Thanksgiving Surprise: Written By Tommy

We were heading to Oregon for Thanksgiving. It is our favorite holiday and fate worked out that her ring was going to be ready that weekend. Thanks to help from my amazing Uncle Phil, we were able to pull off one hell of a surprise. With his help, I was able to fly my parents out to Oregon for this moment and to meet the family. A weekend of narrow misses and incredible timing started with our flight delaying and then arriving less than 10 mins before my parents and only 6 gates away. First close call. Mickey, Alicia's brother picked us up from the airport an hour later than he expected due to the delay. My plan, of asking for permission from Mickey was derailed. Time to adapt. So I knew that Thanksgiving day was going to be action-packed. That morning started with me convincing Alicia to attend a Yoga class that she was not looking forward to attending thanks to our lack of sleep, but I needed her to give me an hour. She ended up going. As soon as she left, I ran upstairs and grabbed the ring. Came down to the kitchen and asked Mickey for permission. Approved. Then, I jumped in his truck and drove to Mike and Mel's to ask for their permission. Great moment, they said yes and we celebrated! We coordinated how the dinner time proposal was going to go. I was going to ask after the blessing at dinner. We got to dinner and after the blessing I was ready. But then, Alicia's Nanny chimed up and wanted to give a small speech. It was beautiful and it really tied into my proposal. I was pumped. After she finished, there was a brief pause, I was ready. Then she chimed up again, "I have one other quick thing..." she read another great anecdote. Now my heart is racing and I am hanging onto every word, waiting for her to finish. It was time. I thanked my parents for the surprise, Mike and Mel for hosting us on this wonderful holiday. I turned to Alicia and told her how much she means to me and how I truly felt. Dropped to one knee, pulled out the ring. She said "Yes."
