Cocktail Attire: Wear cocktail dresses, LBDs, dressy jumpsuits, and dark jackets and slacks.
We recommend the Waldorf, where we have reserved a block of rooms with discounted rates, and we'll be holding all of our wedding events. If you are unable to stay at the Waldorf, The Hilton Los Cabos Property is 20 minutes away from Waldorf Astoria, it’s beautiful and has high quality service. Resorts on the same beach as the Waldorf and thus within walking distance: Sandos Finisterra Playa Grande Solmar We have personally stayed at The Cape - A Thompson Hotel multiple times and think it is a great resort for couples with stunning views of El Arco and Cabo San Lucas. Although they have limited availability, this is a very good way to use your travel points if you transfer to Hyatt. There are a number of affordable hotels in the city of San Jose del Cabo, which is also closer to the airport. It will be $60-80 USD and a 45 minute taxi ride to the wedding resort from SJdC. Cabo San Lucas is a big tourist area and so there are hotels available with every major chain in the city.
We love kids, but will be having a kid-free welcome party, wedding and reception. If you need childcare during the festivities, the Waldorf will be able to provide babysitting. Please find more information on the resort's kids club "Tortugitas" at this link: https://www.waldorfastorialoscabospedregal.com/experiences/tortuguitas-kids-club/ We will update with more details on babysitting as we get closer to the wedding weekend.
Overall, travel to Cabo San Lucas is very safe, but as with any trip abroad its smart to be aware of your surroundings and to make good choices. Millions of people travel to Cabo San Lucas every year with very few serious incidents. The resort is fully secured with a gate and security, and on the streets of Cabo there are lots of police and plenty of other tourists. The US State Department tracks safety in Mexico at a state level. The states of Quintana Roo (Cancun, Tulum) and Baja California Sur (Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo) are at Level 2, indicating that visitors should exercise increased caution. (By comparison, the same Level 2 advisory is applied to France, Spain, most of Western Europe, and the Bahamas. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html )
We are not registering anywhere or expecting wedding presents. You traveling to celebrate with us is a gift. :)
We recommend you do NOT do any kind of currency exchange, and instead bring sufficient small dollar bills from home to cover tips and gratuities. Use your credit card (ideally with no foreign transaction fee) to pay for most things, and don't bother with cash pesos. Anywhere you exchange USD to Pesos you'll probably get a bad exchange rate, and everyone in Los Cabos is happy to take US dollars. We have been to Mexico many times and we have never used a mexican peso bill. If you are very savvy when paying with a card, ask for the cost in pesos and dollars and compare against the current exchange rate (right now 18 pesos to 1 US dollar).
We don't think many of you will need any kind of entry visa or Mexico Tourist Card. Unless you have a unique situation (non US passport) you will fill out a little half sheet form in the airport, and then they'll stamp it and you keep it with you until you leave. Very easy. Remember - this is a tourist town so they want to make it easy for you to come visit.
Tipping in Los Cabos is very similar to the US, for example 15-20% on dinner and $5 to $10 a night for housekeeping. Do check your bills for service charges that could already be covering tips. Minimum wage in Mexico is $5 US a day, so tipping does make an impact for those who are giving you great service!
To get around in Los Cabos we often will use Uber, which has been safe and very reasonably priced. There are regulated taxis available and these can be a good deal for a larger group. However for just couples traveling around, the Taxi might cost $20 US while the Uber costs $7. If you do want to use a taxi, it should be fairly easy for your hotel staff to call you one and have them arrive within a couple minutes.
Water quality at resorts in Los Cabos is good - each resort will use their own filtration system to make sure the water is safe to use. Additionally, they will recommend using bottled water if you are looking to drink, but tap water is fine for showers or brushing your teeth. Additionally restaurants that serve tourists will use purified water for ice and in drinks. We have never gotten sick from the water in Los Cabos - but obviously be careful if you are eating food from a street vendor or somewhere less established.
