We met in 2014 at Camp BB Riback, a Jewish summer camp that we had both been attending since a young age. Believe it or not, we had never met before that summer! Our first ever conversation took place during the Canada Day BBQ on the beach of Pine Lake, where we “nerded” out over Alexis’ Batman phone case. Who would have thought a pickup line about Batman would work! We were pretty much inseparable from that point on. Once the summer ended, we persevered through a long-distance relationship. We can proudly say that we kept the Greyhound bus station in business by going back and forth between Calgary and Edmonton. This persisted until Sam was convinced to move to Edmonton and attend the UofA. For those who are wondering, yes, it was a hard pill to swallow for a Calgarian to betray his city, but hey, that is the power of love and…a better educational institution! The debt was repaid when we moved to Calgary five years later.
Sam planned to propose on Canada day 2020 at the Rimrock Hotel in Banff. We were going to take the gondola up Sulphur Mountain, where Sam would propose with the lovely view of Banff in the background. Did it go as planned? Of course not! The night before, we were out with our future bridesmaids when Alexis stumbled on some stairs and sprained her ankle, leaving her on crutches. Having to act fast, Sam scrambled and adjusted their room to have a balcony with a view of Sulphur Mountain, where he proposed that evening. To complete the Canada Day trifecta, we planned to get married on July 1st but with the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to push the date to September. We are, however, happy to be able to celebrate in the same location that the original proposal took place!
