One of the most popular destinations in Belize, Placencia is a charming, low-key fishing village located at the southern tip of the Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize. Bordered on one side by a lovely mangrove-lined lagoon and on the other by the Caribbean Sea, Placencia is renowned for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The Placencia Peninsula measures approximately 19 miles from north to south but is just half a mile wide. With the look and feel of an island, it’s no surprise that Placencia is often described as the “caye (island) you can drive to.” But despite its popularity as a tourist destination, the main activities in Placencia are strolling the beach or motoring around on an electric golf cart. Placencia is just one of three villages located on the peninsula but has lovely shops, charming cafes, seafood restaurants, a small medical clinic, and an airfield.
Belize is one of the only countries south of the border to have English as the official language. Although everyone in Belize speaks English, you will hear Kriol (a mix of Africans, Spanish, English, and more), Mayan Dialects, Garifuna and Spanish.
Fixed exchange rate of $2 Belize Dollars to $1 USD. US dollars are accepted everywhere but note that bills larger than $20 are not. The US currency must be 'like new' with no tears, or markings. There is one ATM machine located in the village. Credit cards are accepted at larger stores/restaurants, but carrying some cash is advised.
November is considered 'winter' in Belize. Expect temperatures in the mid 80's with occasional rain in the evening.
Our 'must have' packing essentials are below: -Sunscreen (we are close to the equator and it gets HOT). We suggest wearing sunscreen daily, especially on your face! -Bug Spray. Yes, we are in the tropics. We suggest bug spray (in the green can!!) and no, the natural stuff doesn't work here! -Lightweight jacket. It does get a little cool in the evenings, so we suggest a lightweight jacket or rain jacket. -Lightweight cloths, and no heels! You will be on a beach, so back your wedding attire knowing this! -Hiking/Water Shoes if you plan to take any excursions -A good hat! The sun is strong here :) -Sunglasses -Flip flops/pool shoes -Any prescription medicine. We do have pharmacies but don't always have everything that is available in the US.
This is a question that I am always asked (Rachael the wedding planner here). I have been living in Belize for 12 years, and have never had any issues, but I also have many safe practices. - Just like in any new city, don't walk around alone at night. Stay clear of any dark alleyways -Know your surroundings, and pay attention to what you are doing. Don't leave out valuables when you go swimming, etc. -Don't flash money, wear flashy jewelry, or talk about either of these things. People are always listening, and you don't want to be a target -Don't buy drugs/counterfeit items. This is illegal, and you can put yourself in a bad situation. -Placencia is a VERY safe area and patrolled by local police and tourism police. Overall, this is one of the safest areas...so as long as you are practicing safe behavior, you should have an excellent time!
