Travel Note
Arrival Tips SIM Cards & Data: We recommend buying a set data plan so you can use your phone when you arrive. A pay as you go plan works best- examples include Saily, Holafly, O2, etc. It should be no more than $20. Payment: Contactless Visa/Mastercard works for nearly everything—trains, coffee, even taxis. Currency: Cash isn’t essential, but a few £20 notes are handy for small shops or parking. Tips are not necessary and a service charge is generally included in the bill. Jet Lag: Fresh air and sunlight by the sea will help you adjust to UK time. Weather: Devon is mildly cold but breezy—bring a light waterproof jacket just in case and plenty of layers. We recommend taking a look at VRBO or Airbnb in the Topsham area for your stay as a good second option to a hotel.
Flight
For our guests traveling from Los Angeles and overseas, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the most convenient and reliable international gateway to reach our wedding in Exmouth, Devon. Heathrow is the UK’s largest and best-connected airport, with multiple daily non-stop flights from LAX on airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Airlines.
Train
Taking the train is the most relaxing way to reach Exeter (and then Exmouth). The journey offers a beautiful cross-country view of rural England and avoids the stress of London driving. We recommend booking the train ticket in advance, and possibly adding a flexible ticket for ease of mind. Trainline is a great and easy App to buy from. Step-by-step: From Heathrow to Paddington Station: Follow the signs for the Heathrow Express — a dedicated airport train that departs every 15 minutes and takes about 15–20 minutes to reach London Paddington. Tickets can be bought online or at the station; contactless cards are accepted. From Paddington to Exeter St. Davids: At Paddington, board a Great Western Railway (GWR) service to Exeter St. Davids. Trains leave roughly every hour and take 2 hours 10 minutes on average. Sit on the right-hand side for countryside views! Book ahead on GWR.com for best fares (usually £35–£70 per person). From Exeter St. Davids to Exmouth: Change onto the local Avanti or GWR branch line — a short 25-minute ride ending in Exmouth Station. The station is in the town centre, about 5–10 minutes by taxi from most hotels and venues. 💡 Total travel time from Heathrow to Exmouth: roughly 3½ – 4 hours.
