Please check your passport for expiration (Italy does not allow you to enter if your passport expires within 6 months) or ensure you give yourself plenty of time to acquire travel documents. As of 2025, Italy requires American citizens to apply for an ETIAS authorization (European Travel Information and Authorization System). Find more info on the FAQ page regarding this new policy.

Travel Note

ETIAS (European Travel Information Authorization System)

In 2026, the European Union will be requiring an ETIAS authorization for US tourists who want to visit Europe for short stays. This process is fully online and takes only a few minutes to complete. It is a one time application and allows for multiple trips. Application fee is 7 Euros ( about 8 US Dollars) and will be valid for up to three years. This fee is only applicable to travelers aged 18-70. In order to apply for an ETIAS authorization you will need the following: 1. A valid U.S. passport with AT LEAST six months remaining before it expires. 2. Your personal information, including name, address, phone number, and email. They will also ask health/security questions about your medical history, criminal record, or prior travel issues. 3. Travel plans- intended destinations and dates of travel. 4. A credit or debit card for payment. Please take your time and check your answers. Even a small mistake can delay approval. When the system launches in 2026, you can apply via the official ETIAS portal. Beware of unauthorized third-party sites that charge extra fees.
