Coming from Europe: You got this, we believe in you. Coming from outside of Europe: Don't worry, we can guide you with some tips & tricks. Ohrid's airport is quite small, so it's likely that you won't find easy connections or they may be a bit expensive. If that is the case, here's what you can do: 1) Use Skyscanner (https://www.skyscanner.com/) or Kayak (https://www.kayak.com/) to check for flights 2) If you find a connection that works best for you, but the price is too high, you can set up email alerts on both Skyscanner and Kayak that notify you when there's a price change. 3) There are plenty of direct and cheap-ish flights to Europe, after which it will be easy to get to Ohrid. One easy way is to London (usually Heathrow), where you can take a direct WizzAir flight to Ohrid, BUT you will need to change the airport to London Luton (which is very easy through public transportation). This page shows you direct flight connections from your destination: https://www.flightconnections.com/ 4) You can also book a flight to a bigger airport nearby. Your options: Tirana (Albania, 2.5 hours from Ohrid), Skopje (capital of North Macedonia, 3 hours from Ohrid), Thessaloniki (Greece, 4 hours from Ohrid). If this is your most convenient option, once you book your flight, let us know and we can help you to secure transport to Ohrid.
Yes. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you to get a local SIM card for your phone. If you don't get one at the airport, we have marked shops of some of the providers (A1 and T-Mobile are the most popular) in the city where you can get one. This will also be helpful as we will share a Google Maps link with all guests that has hotels, sightseeing, restaurants/bars pinned for your convenience. You can register for a SIM card and 20 GB of data for as little as 5 USD, so it's really worth it. If you travel in a group, one person can get up to 4 SIM cards at once. BONUS if you arrive early: We will have a bunch of SIM cards ready to give out to early arrivers.
You can find country-specific info here: https://mfa.gov.mk/en/page/12/foreign-citizens In short: EU, Schengen signatories, and US passport holders DO NOT require a visa to enter. IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE NOT STAYING IN A HOTEL: You must register with the local police in Ohrid within 24 hours of your arrival, unless you’re in a hotel in which case you will be registered automatically when checking in. You should retain the registration document as proof of registration until your departure from North Macedonia. We can help you register with the police if you are not staying in a hotel. Just get in touch with us.
Accommodation: There are plenty of options on Bookings.com and Airbnb, depending on whether you look for a hotel or more for an apartment/house. We strongly recommend staying in/around the old town of Ohrid (city centre), where you will have walking distance access to shops, sights, restaurants/bars, and transportation to other places. If you are coming in a big group (5+ people), let us know and we may be able to arrange something. How to get around? Taxi will be your best friend. Yell at one from the sidewalk of a busy street, ask your hotel to call you one.
Your flight will be by far the biggest expense. Macedonia is very cheap, for example, you can find a good hotel starting at USD 30 per night, and an average meal with drinks will be around 5 USD. If you are coming from outside of Europe and worried about affording the flight expenses, we've set up a little 'travel fund' instead of a registry where other guests can contribute, just get in touch with us and we'll talk it through. We want to make sure that as many people as possible can come!
As fancy as you want it to be! Macedonian weddings are a great opportunity to go all out on that outfit you've held hostage during the pandemic. All jokes aside - the wedding will be semi-formal to formal, so anything from a nice pant suit, cocktail dress, funky silk pants, full-on tuxedo or ball gown will be welcomed. ON SHOES: If you like heels, you'll be in good company. If not, you'll also be in good company. There will be some minor walking on cobblestones and on grass, but the dancefloor is cemented (phew).
