Hey...I like your shoes.

A cheesy pickup line and a "maybe"

Forrest and Alex met at Sonoma State University, where they both were completing their bachelor's degrees in kinesiology. They had classes together all four years, including a nutrition class in Alex's sophomore year. One day in class, Forrest sat near Alex and told her, "Hey, I like your shoes!" That was the last time they talked for about a year and a half. As Forrest will tell you now, he was planting a seed and playing the long game with Alex. In the fall of their senior year, Alex had a textbook Forrest needed for a class. He kindly offered to give her cash upfront for the book or said that he would take her to lunch. Alex promptly replied, "well, let me think about it," for no reason other than being incredibly nervous. After a couple of hours, she texted him and said that she'd like to go to lunch with him. The day they were supposed to go to lunch, Alex had a ticket to see a concert with some girlfriends. Forrest had planned a hike before their lunch, and Alex was more than happy to oblige. They went for a hike and then went out for a late lunch. The late lunch turned into shutting the restaurant down, and Alex completely missing the concert. After possibly the longest lunch ever, they sat in the car together, talking for an hour. Since that day, they have managed to move to Southern California, complete graduate programs, and start careers. Forrest still gives Alex a hard time for saying maybe when he asked her out, and Alex laughs that Forrest's opening line to her was, "I like your shoes."
