A Place With A Story

The Wedding Website of Grace Hoover and Thomas Alexander
We chose this venue not just for its beauty, but for the feeling it gave us. The history, character, and charm made it the perfect place to celebrate with each of you. In 1817 Starke Hunter and his wife Elizabeth Boykin Hunter built the original house on the land until SC Governor Stephen Decatur Miller bought it. From 1828–1835 Miller lived here with his daughter, Civil War diarist Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut. During the time of the Civil War, the grounds functioned as a Family Medicine Clinic and OBGYN office. In the 1840s Captain Alexander Boykin constructed the famous six-level terraced gardens, which inspired the name as it is known today, "The Terraces". From 1923–1947 the house was converted into the Charlotte Thompson School after a tragic fire at the nearby Cleveland School. The drainage pool found in the garden was a refreshing way for joyful children to stay cool. Additionally, desk markings can be seen throughout, on the home's original hardwood floors.
