our love story

HIS POV Grace and I met many years ago in the classiest trailer park in Florence County, The King's Academy. The first time we ever actually hung out was our sophomore year when we went out with several of our mutual friends and she watched my card get declined at a Cookout. Not long after that experience we went on our first date which she did not know was a date until after. The Lord works in mysterious ways. From these humble beginnings we have been going strong through high school, college, and beyond. She was there for me while I was stationed half way around the country and still managed to be so much to so many people even as she navigated PA school. Grace has been my homecoming queen, my college homecoming queen, and my KA Rose. I am not the only one who recognizes how special, caring, thoughtful, and loving she is, but I am the only one lucky enough to give her a diamond to match her crown. HER POV In 2017, a lifelong friend of mine called me and asked me to go bowling with some people from our class. I wasn’t doing much, so I decided to go for what I thought would be a casual night out with friends. Little did I know that the painfully shy boy who sat across from me allegedly had a massive crush on me. One way or another, Thomas got my phone number that day, and over the next two weeks he incessantly messaged me. One of those conversations landed on the topic of movies—our favorites, least favorites, and everything in between. When Thomas shared that he had never seen some of my favorites, I made a comment that maybe he should. In a charming, but abrupt manner, he kind of invited himself over to my house the next weekend. I was a little indifferent about the situation, if I remember correctly, and thought along the lines of, “Oh, what’s the worst that could happen?” and “If it goes horrendously, well, I don’t have to hang out with him again.” When the day came for Thomas to come over, like I said, I didn’t think much of it. So I wore leggings and a T-shirt that was three sizes too big and probably a cardigan (which has since coined the name my “Mimi sweater”). My hair was a mess, and I had been laying around the house all day. So when the afternoon came and I heard the knock on the door, Thomas surprised me. This man was standing on my front doorstep in a pair of khakis and a nice button-up collared shirt—all just to sit on my family’s living room couch on a Saturday afternoon and watch MY FAVORITE MOVIES. By the time we had started and finished two movies, I thought, “Surely this boy is tired of me,” but no. Thomas wanted to take me to dinner, and with my severely lacking attire, we decided Mexican was the best bet. After a few chicken and cheese quesadillas—and perhaps a friendly debate on the proper way to eat your chips, salsa, and queso—Thomas did not stop with the surprises there. After hours together with the quiet boy from class (and me probably talking his ear off), he wanted to get dessert. We sat in the parking lot with our milkshakes and shared our stories and interests, talking about everything from movies, music, travel and adventure, even down to what the worst Thanksgiving side dishes are. When I look at Thomas today, I still see the thoughtful, genuine, meek 16-year-old boy who spent that simple Saturday with me. But I also see a man who is ambitious, tender-hearted, faithful, protective, and caring. So over all the years after that Saturday in February, we never quit hanging out and slowly we became best friends. I have come to learn that the joy Thomas brings me in all the little moments makes every other moment that much sweeter.

For all the days along the way
