A Greek Orthodox wedding is a symbolic ceremony full of meaningful traditions. Here is what guests can expect: 1. Processional – The bride, groom, and wedding party enter the church, often accompanied by music and a priest. 2. Blessing of the Crowns (Stefana) – The priest places crowns on the bride and groom’s heads, symbolizing their union and the start of a new family. 3. Exchange of Rings – Rings are blessed and exchanged, representing love, fidelity, and commitment. 4. Common Cup – The couple drinks from a shared cup of wine, symbolizing the sharing of joys and sorrows in married life. 5. Ceremonial Walk (Ceremony of the Koumbaros/Koumbara) – The priest leads the couple in a symbolic walk around the altar, called the “Ceremony of the Dance of Isaiah”, representing their journey together. 6. Pronouncement & Blessing – The priest pronounces them husband and wife and offers prayers for a blessed marriage. 7. Conclusion – The ceremony ends with a blessing of the couple, and the newlyweds exit the church, sometimes greeted by rice, flowers, bubbles, or applause.

Our wedding will be a multi-cultural celebration, honoring Greek, Puerto Rican, Irish, and Dominican traditions. The ceremony will follow Greek Orthodox customs, with most rituals happening within the ceremony itself. At the reception, you’ll see cultural traditions reflected in music and dancing, including: Greek dances: Kalamatianos, Syrtos, Zeibekiko, Sirtaki, Hasapiko, Ikariotikos, Tsifteteli Puerto Rican & Dominican styles: Bomba, Plena, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton (including perreo-style dancing) As well as money dances, where guests may choose to throw money (usually single bills) on the bride and groom during important dances, which serve as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, and well-wishes for their new life together (like the first dance, father-daughter, and mother-son dances). Participation is welcome but completely optional. We encourage guests to look up these dances or styles beforehand if you’d like to join in and celebrate with us!
